Elmer Gwinn Ferrin, 70, born April 27, 1928 in Shawnee, OK, died unexpectedly Thursday, January 29, 1999. He was the eldest son of Horace and Lorene (Richardson) Ferrin, formerly of Oklahoma City, and Yukon, where he attended Putnam County Schools and graduated from Yukon High School in 1947.Gwinn was exceptionally mechanical, and learned, at the age of 14, to fly his favorite airplane, the Piper Cub, using an obscure air field which is now Wiley Post. His other passion was to work in the wheat harvest fields across the Great Plains, especially on the farms of his aunts and uncles in Kansas.
He attended Oklahoma A & M College. He joined the U.S Air Force in 1947 and served as an aviation mechanic during the Koren Conflict. After his military service, he worked for United Airlines in California before returning to Oklahoma City, where he was employed by the FAA in the 1950's. He continued his occupation there until his retirement in 1990, in the NDT section.
In the late 1960's, Gwinn flew and maintained a Cessna 182 with his father, from Wiley Post Airport. Gwinn ( or "Glen", as he was known by many friends) lived an active and useful retired life, mainly being available to anyone who needed help. His mechanical aptitude and giving spirit were well known in the neighborhood. After health problems forced him to give up his pilot's license, he began building and flying radio-controlled model airplanes.
He is survived by his wife , Margie, of 39 years; daughter, Linda McClain; sons, Gary Lowther of Ponca City, OK; David Ferrin of Dallas, TX and Mark Todd Ferrin of Shawnee, OK. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Ferrin, Amarillo, TX, and sister, Miriam Powell, Santa Fe, NM, eight devoted grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
Funeral services will be held 10 AM, Monday, January 25, 1999, at the Resurrection Memorial Chapel, Resurrection Cemetery, 7800 Northwest Expressway. Vondel L. Smith & Son Mortuary, 13125 N. MacArthur, 720-1439.
Gwinn Ferrin, son of H. H. Ferrin of Oklahoma City, is helping Valtos Richardson harvest. He and his friend are going to make harvest through different states. This is their second stop for harvest. Gwinn is Valtos' nephew. -- The The Wilmore News, July 7, 1944.
