Glen Gray of Tacoma, Washington arrived Saturday with the body of his father, E. E. Gray, who had died at Tacoma while on a visit to his sons in Washington.The cause of Mr. Gray's death was paralysis. While visiting with his son, Glen, he was stricken and never rallied, dying a few days after he was taken ill.
The body was met at Dodge City by a funeral cortege from Protection, Saturday morning, and escorted here.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the Methodist Church. The funeral sermon was preached by Mr. Gray's pastor, the Rev. Walter H. Dellinger of the Protection M. E. Church, and the body with the full Masonic ceremony and honors at the cemetery. Interment was in the Protection cemetery by the side of his deceased wife who had preceded him in death about 3 years ago.
The funeral was largely attended as Mr. Gray was a pioneer business man of the Protection community and had a large circle of friends and acquaintances.
OBITUARY Elmer Ellsworth Gray was born at Blue Mound, Ill., October 25, 1863. He lived there until about the age of ten years when he lost both his father and mother in death. He was then taken into a home by a family by the name of Logan. He came west in 1881 with a sister, Mrs. Louis Black, and settled at Ellsworth, Kansas. He later moved to Table Rock, Nebr., and went to work in a drug store. This was the beginning of his professional career.
On June 20, 1895, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Lulu May McElhany at DuBois, Nebr. Four children were born to this union, Lyle Harold, who now lives at Ponca City, Okla., Glen Neal, Seattle, Washington; Leona Marguerite Crawford, Cimarron, Kansas; Howard Francis, Renton, Washington. His good wife passed to her heavenly home three years ago. All the above children, with one step-son, Floyd McElhany, Renton, Washington, and two grandchildren, Johnnie and Romona Crawford are left to mourn.
He came with his family to Protection, Kansas, June 18, 1910, and settled on a farm north of Protection. He later bought a drug store and moved to town, remaining in this business for 17 years. In March, 1928, he sold his store and has been visiting among the children since. He was on a visit in Washington state when he took sick and was taken to a hospital at Tacoma, where, after nine days of illness he passed to his reward at the age of 64 years, 10 months and 2 days.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Woodman Lodge and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
Funeral service were conducted from the Methodist Church, Protection, Kansas, by Rev. Walter H. Dellinger. Burial in Protection cemetery.
