Thursday, October 7, was the 21st birthday of Jack Hackney, and in honor of the occasion about 40 of his friends gathered at his home south of Coldwater and gave him a surprise. All present enjoyed themselves to the utmost. Indoor and out door games were played. At a late hour refreshments of sandwiches, pickles, cake and coffee were served. Besides this, each person present enjoyed a piece of Jack's birthday cake, which had been baked by Mrs. Henry Knecht. It was a beautiful angel food cake, measured 13 inches in diameter, was handsomely trimmed and was cut into 45 large pieces.Those present besides Mr. and Mrs. Dick Hackney and Jack were: Mr. and Mrs. Roy Blake, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Knecht, Mr. and Mrs. Atteberry and son, Claude, Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Hackney and children, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hackney and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Steierl, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jett, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hackney, Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Bibb, Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Jantzen and daughter, Margaret, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Coles and children, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. McGauley and daughter, Ardinell, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Knecht, Charley Deewall, Mr. Cook, Henry Knecht and Misses Emma May and Viola Bibb, Edna Morris, Josie Griffith and Ella Gilbert.
