Young Child Dies From Suffocation

Infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Herd Succumbs

Carolyn Kay, the six months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Herd, who live on the Melvin Patterson ranch in the West Creek community southwest of Coldwater, passed away last Friday evening.

Mrs. Herd had given the baby its bottle and laid it on its side in its bed and when she returned to the house a short time later from doing some chores outside the baby was found on its face nearly suffocated with some of the cover over its face. Mrs. Herd frantically called for help and Mr. and Mrs. Patterson arrived soon, but the little one failed to respond to treatment.

Funeral services were held in the Protection Christian church last Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and were in charge of Rev. D. E. Calloway, pastor of the Assembly of God church in Coldwater.

Mrs. Walter Broadie of Ashland sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and "Asleep in Jesus," accompanied by Mrs. Earl Christopher of Protection. The casket bearers were Helen Purcell and Dorothy Sooter of Coldwater and Marlene Edmonston and Patsy Myers of Protection. Burial was in the Protection cemetery.

Carolyn Kay was a lovable child and her tragic passing elecits the sympathy of all. She was born at Wichita, Kans., February 8, 1947, and passed away at Coldwater, Kans., August 29, 1947, at the age of six months and 21 days.

She is survived by her parents and by one sister, Karmen Sue, age 3; also by her grandparents and a great grandmother and a great grandfather, as well as by many other relatives.
