A former Protection resident and employee of the Protection Co-op died in Lyons Sept. 19, 1996.Walter Hayes Hicks died at the Lyons District Hospital. He lived to the age of 83 years. Hicks was in Protection from 1951 to 1958, coming from an elevator at Sublette, Kansas, to here.
When he left Protection in 1958, he moved to Lyons and worked for the Co-op there. He was a retired grain warehouseman for the Lyons Co-op. He retired from his position at the Co-op there after having served for 18 years: 1858 to 1976.
Walt was born at Guymon, Oklahoma, on March 29, 1913, and was the son of Benjamin Allen and Edna Green Hicks. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II from 1942 to 1945, having been involved in the North African campaign and in the invasion of Italy.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Men, and Bon Ame Sunday School class, all of Lyons.
On May 29, 1953, he married Grace L. Dulabahn at Ulysss. That was during the period of time when he lived and worked in Protection. Mrs. Hicks is among his survivors and lives in Lyons.
One of his brothers was Benjamin T. Hicks, who taught science at the school in Protection during some of the time that he and Walt lived here. Benjamin is among his survivors, and now lives at Novato, California.
Other survivors include three sons, Arthur Hicks of Park City, Kansas, Leroy Hicks of Lansing, Kansas, and Edwin Hicks of Chicago, Illinois; a sister, Florence E. Lawrence of Andover, Kansas, and five grandchildren.
Funeral for Walter Hicks was Monday morning (September 23) at the United Methodist Church in Lyons. The Rev. Gary Appleton presided. Burial was in the Lyons Municipal Cemetery, with full military honors. Sillin Funeral Home of Lyons was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials to Walter Hayes Hicks may be sent to the church or to Bell and Star Fund, both in care of the Sillin Funeral Home at Lyons.
