Rose (Baker) Hinman

The Western Star, June 24, 1938.

Pioneer Mother Dies Tuesday Morning

Mrs. Rose Hinman, who had been in failing health since last January, passed away at 12 o'clock noon on Tuesday of this week at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Claude Sims, in this city. The body was taken on Thursday to Nickerson where funeral services were held in the M. E. church. Burial was in Fairview cemetery north of Nickerson, the plot having been deeded to Huntsville township three generations ago by Grandfather Hinman.

Obituary

Rose Baker, daughter of Ira and Elizabeth Baker, was born in Gallatin, Mo., March 15, 1872, and passed away in Coldwater, Kans., June 21, 1938, at the age of 66 years, 3 months and 4 days.

When eight years of age she came with her parents to Coffey county, Kans. That she knew the rigors of pioneer life is evidenced by the fact that this trip was made in a covered wagon, and one of her tasks was to help an older brother drive the milk cows on the journey. In 1886 the family moved to Rice county, Kans.

She was united in marriage in Nickerson with Homer Hinman in 1889, and the young couple filed on a homestead a few miles from her parental home. They also filed on a timber claim, where they set out and tended 6000 trees. That the works of men live after them is shown by the fact that the greater percent of these trees are still alive.

Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hinman - Vere, Alice, Owen and Inez. All are living except Owen who died in the Philippines in 1932. Her husband preceded her in death in January, 1933.

As a young woman Mrs. Hinman was converted and joined the Methodist church. Later, she and her husband transferred their membership to the English Lutheran church in Hutchinson where it remained. Her entire life was spent in loving service to her family, her neighbors and her friends.

Surviving are three children: Vere L. Hinman of Marshfield, Mo.; Mrs. Alice Sims and Mrs. Inez Patterson of Coldwater; four grandchildren; Donald Hinman of Marshfield, Mo., and Eric, Calvert and Rosemary Sims of Coldwater; two brothers: John Baker of Carmen, Okla., and Will Baker of Hutchinson, and two sisters: Mrs. Geo. Duet of Carmen, Okla., and Mrs. Harry Schultz of Hutchinson, Mrs. Hinman had retained her home in Nickerson, but spent several winters with her daughters in this county.
