The Protection Post, December 3, 1936.

'GRANDMA' HOPKINS, PIONEER RESIDENT,
DIED HERE MONDAY

Mrs. Rebecca Adeline Hopkins passed away at her home here in Protection inst Monday evening, November 30, at 7 o'clock. She had been ill but a few days previous to her passing.

Rebecca Adeline Carrol was born August 15, 1861 in Terre Haute, Ind., to Mr. and Mrs. Bartholomew Carrol. Her mother died when she was a young girl and one, being the oldest girl in the family, kept house for her father and mothered her younger sisters and brothers. She was married to Amblet M. Hopkins in 1880 and three years later came to Kansas to make her home. They settled in Sedgwick county, living there for a little over a year and then came to Comanche county where they resided until their deaths. In 1896 her husband died and for the next eleven years she lived on the farm and worked to keep her family of six children together. In 1907 she married Joseph Doctor Jinks Hopkins, who preceded her in death eight years. In 1917 she took her infant granddaughter, Margie Helen and raised her to womanhood. She and her granddaughter remained on the farm until eight months ago when she moved to Protection. Where she and her daughter, Nannie, have lived together.

A boy and a girl died in infancy and she leaves to mourn her passing four sons and two daughters - William M. Hopkins of Deora, Colo., Thomas R. Hopkins and Nancy Ann Towner of Protection, Joseph Jinks Hopkins of Selman, Okla., Minnie Petty of Jerome, Idaho, and Charles Spencer Hopkins of Acres, Kans.

She leaves one brother, Mr. John Carrol of Stockton, Calif., and three sisters, Mrs. Nannie McConnell, Mrs. Jenny Taylor and Mrs. Carrie Roberts, all of Clinton, Indiana. In addition to these are eighteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

She united with the Baptist church in her young womanhood and remained faithful the rest of her life.
