Arthur Hough, 87, died Oct. 5, 1996, at Pioneer Lodge in Coldwater.He was born to Harry and Elsie (Elliott) Hough in a sod house 12 miles west of Dodge City Feb., 17, 1909.
From the time he was a child, he loved books and read anything available. He liked going to school and enjoyed sports. He enjoyed playing with his brothers and sisters, and as the oldest son, he did more than his share of the chores. He attended country grade school and graduated from Ford High School in 1927. Shortly after, he moved with the family to a farm in Comanche County.
Hough married Bernice Todd, a Comanche County teacher, Apr. 28, 1935. To this union were born two sons. He cherished his four grandchildren.
Arthur was a father who spent time with his sons, listened to them and gave them guidance, as needed. He was a hard working man who always had time to help a friend and neighbor. And after a day's work, he liked to head out to a pasture pond somewhere and catch a mess of fish.
In 1948, Hough decided to leave the farm. He moved his family to Medicine Lodge for the next six years where he learned the blacksmithing trade. In 1954, they moved back to WaKeeney to take over a blacksmith shop.
Then in 1955, they moved back to Coldwater and bought the blacksmith shop. Art's Repair Shop was a busy blacksmith shop for the next 28 years. He retired from the shop in 1983.
He and his wife lived in their home in Coldwater until ill health required him to enter Pioneer Lodge in July of 1994.
He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Alan, in July of 1977, and granddaughter, Janice, who died in April of 1988.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice, of the home, son David, and wife, Cathy, of Emporia; grandchildren, Karen Hough Majidzadeh and husband Todd of New York, Christina Wilson and husband Paul of Charlottesville, Va., and Steven Hough of Casper, Wyo.; a sister, Edna May Webster, and husband, Clark of Protection; a brother, Bill, and wife, Jewel, of Tulsa; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was Oct. 8, 1996, at Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, with Rev. Elwyn Tedford presiding. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery in Coldwater.
The family requests memorials for the Coldwater Presbyterian Church.
