D. E. Howard, who has been a resident of Coldwater since 1917, passed away at his home in this city last Saturday morning after a lingering illness. Death was due to a heart ailment.Funeral services were held in the Methodist church in Coldwater at 10:30 o'clock Monday morning and were in charge of the pastor, Rev. Donald A. Kessler, assisted by Rev. Wm. E. Callahan of Wichita, a former pastor, here. A mixed quartet composed of John and Wallace White, Mrs. Donald Booth and Mrs. J. W. Brewer, sang "God Will Take Care of You" and "Crossing the Bar," accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Hobart McMillen.
Burial was in the family lot in the cemetery at Great Bend. The graveside services Monday afternoon were in charge of the Great Bend Masonic Lodge. The pallbearers were W. P. Morton, H. H. Kopke, Chester Hiner, Ray Lowman, Dan Crowe and J. W. Carleton.
Obituary David Edward Howard, son of David and Maria Howard, was born on February 1, 1866, at Lafayette, Ohio, and went to his reward and eternal home on January 21, 1950, at the age of 83 years, 11 months and 20 days.
At the age of four years he came with his parents to Republic county, Kansas, where they homesteaded a claim. In the fall of 1888 Mr. Howard went to Great Bend, Kans., and attended the Central Normal College for one year. Ten years of his life were devoted to teaching school.
In 1892 he was united in marriage with Miss Mary J. Doonan. To this union were born two daughters - Mrs. Margaret Donaldson of Great Falls, Mont., and Mrs. Annie H. Williams of Macksville, Kans,; and four sons - Louis E. Howard of Topeka, Kans., Dr. David Marion Howard of Augusta, Ga., Dr. David Marion Howard of Augusta, Ga., Dr. Lawrence L. Howard of Great Falls, Mont., and Leonard A. Howard of St. Paul, Minn., all of whom survive. Other survivors, besides the faithful wife, are four sisters and three brothers, who live in California; 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Howard resided on a farm in Barton county until 1908, when they purchased and moved to a farm in Rich county. There they lived one year before moving to Hutchinson. In the fall of 1913, they moved to Manhattan, Kans., to be near the college their children were attending. For the past 32 years they had resided in Coldwater, except for a short time when they lived near Emporia, Kans.
Mr. Howard was converted and joined the baptist church at the age of 20. He had been an active member of the Methodist church since 1892, serving faithfully in the several offices of the church.
He also served as a member of the Coldwater City Council. He showed a Christian interest in life and will be greatly missed in the church. He had been a member of the Masonic lodge for many years.
