The Western Star, April 7, 1922.

J. F. (Jack) Howery Writes.

The old timers in Comanche-co. will well remember "Jack" Howery, who lived about ten miles southeast of this city during the latter 80s and early 90s. (1880s & 1890s) Mr. Howery is now a resident of Stillwell, Oklahoma. While a resident of this county he was a neighbor and chum of C. M. Cole, also of E. G. Carthrae. They took many a hunt together. Mr. Cole received a letter from Mr. Howery date January 22, from which we are permitted to make the following extracts:

Mr. C. M. Cole,
Coldwater, Kansas.

Kind Friend: During the past few days my thoughts have been centering and dwelling on two families of long ago friends, who I suppose are still living in Comanche-co., if they are living at all. They are yourself and E. G. Carthrae and your families. Two years ago this winter I learned from Sherman Bidwell, who worked in the oil fields near Eldorado, Kansas, that you still live in Comanche-co., and so I am writing, just to see if I can hear from you.

It does me good to ponder in my mind about the times and happenings in the pioneer days in Comanche-co., and yet it makes me feel sad to know that it is impossible to live over those days again. I have taken many wild vision-chases since those days spent in Comanche-co. My family and I spent four years in the Rocky Mountains chasing after wild and speculative visions. I chased them even down into Arkansas, and then went dead broke, but picked up a little in the oil fields in two and a half years. And now my wife and I are living here in Stillwell, Okla., among the Cherokee Indians by ourselves, but in our own home.

Now, Charley, I want you or some of your family to write us a letter and tell us about yourselves, and tell us if you know what has become of Carthrae and his family.

Address, J. F. Howery, Stillwell, Oklahoma.
