The Republican, January 6, 1887

DIED - At the residence of her parents in this city on New Year's night. Miss Hattie Melchi, aged about 17 years. She had been ill about four months. Quick consumption was the cause of death. She leaves a father, three brothers, two of them small, and two small sisters to mourn the loss of a beloved sister. Truly, the past twelve months have proved a sad misfortune to the family of Mr. Melchi. Last winter and while on a hunt, Mr. Melchi froze his feet, and one of them so severely as to necessitate amputation, and thereby crippling him for life. Following this event, his wife sickened and died, leaving the charge of the already stricken family upon the hands of the oldest daughter. Scarcely had the family recovered in a measure from grief of the mother's death, than the last decease occurred. The father is left with a family of small children to care for, and Jack Melchi, the grown brother, is now the main support of the family. "There is no cloud so dark but it has a silver lining." 'Tis said, "All bad luck and grief is counteracted by 'good luck' and happiness."
