From last week's Protection Post.Mrs. John Moore, familiarly known in this entire community as Grandma, died at her home in this city at about 1:30 o'clock, Wednesday afternoon, November 26, after an illness of less than a week's duration. "Grandma" had been stricken with a heart trouble from which she had previously suffered, on Thursday of last week, and from that time she grew steadily weaker until death claimed her Wednesday afternoon.
Mrs. Moore was born in Belmont-co., Ohio in September of 1847. Her maiden name was Miller. In August 1886, she was married to John Moore in her native state. The following year Mr. and Mrs. Moore came to Kansas, settling in Bourbon-co. where they lived until 1879. From that county they went to Sumner-co., living near Wellington five years and from there moving to Comanche-co. in the autumn of 1883 - thirty six years ago. They settled on the claim which corners now with the city of Protection on the southwest, being the quarter on which the present Protection public and high school buildings now stand. To them were born several children five of whom are still living, one dying in infancy and a daughter, Lillie May Logan, died in Protection, November 11, 1910. Those living are C. W. Moore, H. E. Moore and Mrs. W. H. Richardson of Protection, E. F. Moore of Sitka, and Mrs. H. E. Ross of Marion, Kans.
Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by her husband in October of 1894.
The claim taken by Mr. and Mrs. Moore was the third pre-emption taken in the Bluff Creek - Kiowa valley, and here she lived the best of her life, helping to mold the wild prairie into the pleasant and prosperous community it now is.
"Grandma" was a consistent Christian, living the principles of Christianity before her family and community. Her death is the passing of a soul from a life of loving service to its eternal reward.
