On Sunday, October 29, the family and some old friends of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Bosley gathered at their lovely rural home for a reunion to celebrate the birthday and discharge of T4 Harvey Myers, Mrs. Bosley's son.Harvey enlisted in 1940. He has been in five major campaigns in the European Theater of War, has been awarded the Bronze Star, Combat Medal, five battle stars, Good Conduct Medal and Pre-Pearl Harbor Ribbon.
Harvey says, of the original 170 in Company D, 35th Division, 137th Infantry who trained together for several years, only seven are left. The turnover in some of the battles was 300 percent replacement.
The 35th Division, which was intensively trained, was with the Third Army but was called to help out whenever needed. They fought with every Army but one; were called upon to help push back the Belgium Bulge and fought against the crack German SS troops and wherever the going was toughest, and the fighting hardest.
The 35th Division has an interesting and brilliant record. At one time they were in battle every day for over 100 days, advancing so fast their provisions couldn't always keep up with them. When night came they dug a fox hole, and crawled in. And there it was around ten o'clock before it became dark, so the days were long and hard, with K rations for many meals.
Harvey and wife had just returned from a vacation in Colorado, seeing many interesting sights including the Royal Gorge. They are going to Baltimore, where he will take an Insurance Course which began November 5.
Besides the guests of honor at the dinner - Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Myers - were Mr. and Mrs. Claude Myers and Jimmie of Dodge City, Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Clark and Colleen and Jerry of Medicine Lodge, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Chance and daughters of Wilmore, Mr. and Mrs. Chelsea Staley and daughters, Mr. F. A. Kimple, Miss Genevieve Kimple, Mrs. Margaret Welden and daughter, Dee.
A lovely birthday cake centered the dining table, and a bountiful dinner and evening lunch was enjoyed. The evening was spent in singing popular and sacred songs.
