Fireman 3c Charles D. Nicholas of the U. S. Navy has just returned to a Japanese base after tour of duty in the Korean area during which time he served aboard the U.S.S. Boxer, an aircraft carrier which recently survived a disastrous explosion and fire.Charles informed his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Nicholas of 800 E. 9th St., that he considered himself fortunate in not experiencing any worse mishap than a complete drenching. Nicholas reported that nine of his shipmates were killed and 35 injured in the explosion.
The youth has been in the Navy for the past year and was graduated from the Cheyenne High School with the class of 1950.
Charles, son of Mr.and Mrs. Almon Nicholas, formerly of Coldwater but now of Cheyenne, was born here and is a grandson of Mrs. Hattie Bain and of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Nicholas of Coldwater. He is 20 years of age. He is known as "Buddy" Nicholas in this city.
