Ferrin Gravestones in the North Jay Cemetery, Essex County, New York.
Ok, cous', here's the one of Achsah & Hanna Philura Ferrin's stones. That's me in the background looking for more of their families. Achsah's is about center & Hannah's is to the right as you look at the pic. I'm in the middle of the 2 back a row or 2. This picture looks east.
From left to right the stones in the main row are: Elvira Ferrin (daughter of Zebulon & Achsah), Sophronia Ferrin Murch (also Zeb & Achsah's daughter), Achsah & then Philura Hannah Murch Ferrin.
North Jay Cemetery is in a small valley, very sandy & dry soil. Very typical of the area here. Not sure why anyone thought this would be good farming area. Soils are rather thin & sandy with little organic matter. I've spent 14 years now trying to enrich the veggie garden & it's still just barely above pure sand.

His farm consists of 200 acres of land: March 7th 1853 he was married to Betsey A., daughter of John W. DeKalb. They have four children living: Eber W., Maggie, Henry C., and John F. At left: Gravestone for J.W. DeKalb, North Jay Cemetery, North Jay, Essex County, New York. Photo by Gerald Desko.John W. DeKalb was the father of Betsey DeKalb Ferrin. A biography for his father, John C. DeKalb, was published in History of Essex County by H.P. Smith. D. Mason & Co. Publishers, Syracuse, 1885:
"John C. DeKalb, p.o. Ausable Forks, was born March 21, 1838: is a leading merchant in Ausable Forks; has been in trade seven years in Middle Granville, Washington County, N.Y., and three years at Ausable Forks. He owns 265 acres of land in Jay. Was married Oct 17, 1867, to Joan A., daughter of D.B. Stickney, of Jay. Mr. DeKalbs grandfather, John DeKalb, was a native-born German, a shoemaker by trade, and while living in Washington and Essex Counties, he pursued his calling from house to house, which was called 'whipping cat'. He was a soldier of the War of 1812. He came to Jay about 1800, and married Lydia, daughter of Zephaniah Palmer. They had one son, John W., and three daughters, Caroline, Betsey, and Statira. John W. was married, April 17, 1832, to Submit, daughter of Captain Jessee Tobey, of Jay, and they had nine children: Betsey A., now Mrs. Wesley Ferrin of Jay; Ermina, wife of W.W. Purmort, of Missouri, (deceased); Lydia P., Mrs. Augustus DeKalb, of Washington County; Martha, Mrs. B.F. Broughton, of Poultney, VT; Mary, Mrs. H.A. Griffin of Cleveland, OH; William Barron (deceased), and John C. the subject of this. p. 718 ".

The above photo of North Jay Cemetery, Essex County, New York, shows the Ferrin plot in relation to the DeKalb plot. Betsey never got too far away. I believe her parents' farm & Zeb & Achsah's farm were very close to one another. And they're buried pretty close to one another also.Anyway, in the left foreground of the picture is a fairly new stone, diagonally up to the left is one with a cross on it. Behind that one are Betsey's parents' stones. The large dark DeKalb stone to the left is probably one of her brothers. I have a close up of it & a closer one of it & the 2 parents' stones also.
Go back to the road. The Wesley Clay Family Ferrin monument is next to the road, third one up. You can see the bar around the plot behind it. Achsah & her daughters are over to the left quite a bit & uphill & I don't believe you can see them in this shot. My husband & I believe that that's Ellis Mountain in the background. North Jay Cemetery is easy to locate. It's on the topographical map of the area. It is located just south of where Stickney Bridge Road comes into Green Street.
