The Western Star, June 11, 1887.

OPENING OF THE OPERA HOUSE

One of the toniest affairs of the season was the ball given on the completion of the open house by its manager, D. H. Rich, last Tuesday evening. The ball had been well advertised through the papers and by posters, and as a natural consequence people came in from all parts of the county. Dancing was begun in the spacious hall about 9 o'clock, and was kept up at a lively rate until about 3 o'clock in the morning. The music was an improvement upon anything we have had lately at our balls, and the supper was simply superb, and was served on the stage. Most of the ladies were stylishly dressed in white and looked real captivating. All who attended say with one accord that this was the most enjoyable ball ever given in our city.

Among the number who attended the opera house ball last Tuesday evening, we noticed the following persons from a distance: Charley Hand and Miss Nettie Wilkinson, George Newman and Miss Grace McWilliams, Mead Yates and Miss Cad Patrick, Joe Tincher and wife, C. M. Jones and wife of Nescatunga; Col. D. R. Green and daughter Leigh, of Fair Lawn Ranch; C. H. Burgess and wife of Greensburg.

D. H. Rich opened a roller skating rink in the opera house Thursday evening, and despite the inclement weather that prevailed on that evening there was a large crowd in attendance, and nearly all "took to" skates from the start. The opera house is 50 x 100 feet in the clear and has a hard maple floor which makes it one of the best rinks in the state. The rink will be open again tonight.

The skating rink at the new opera house has been running full blast under the efficient management of D. H. Rich, for the past week. The rink is open three nights of each week and old and young alike seem to enjoy exercise of skating. Roller skating is a wholesome exercise, if taken in moderation.
