The Protection Post, June 6, 1918.

Mrs. G. W. Reed Dies in Wichita Hospital

The sad news was received in Protection at a little past four o'clock on Wednesday afternoon that Mrs. G. W. Reed was very low in the Wichita hospital, and at a little past six o'clock the still sadder news came that she had passed from this life. Her husband was by her side at the time of her death.

The news of Mrs. Reed's death came as a shock and surprise to most of the people of Protection and community, for although Mrs. Reed had been in poor health for the past few years it was not known that she was in a critical condition and only a very few knew that she had gone to the hospital in Wichita. On Monday of this week Mrs. Reed was operated upon for a tumor and was progressing nicely following the operation until on Wednesday morning when complications developed which caused death at about five o'clock that evening.

The remains were brought to Protection this afternoon on the Santa Fe and are at the family home in the southeast part of the city. The arrangements for the funeral and burial had not been made at the time the Post went to press Thursday evening, as the two children, Clifford Reed and Mrs. Geneva Hamilton, who live in Colorado, had not yet arrived. Mrs. Reed, together with her husband and family came to Protection almost nineteen years ago, being among the very earliest settlers, and has had an active part in the development of the community. She was a good wife, mother and friend, and an active and consistent Christian woman, and until her failing health prevented, had an active part in the religious life of the community.

Beside her husband she leaves to mourn her demise four children, Mrs. Frank Moore of the Oklahoma country, Clifford Reed of Colorado, Chas. Reed of Protection, and Mrs. Geneva Hamilton of Colorado. The community mourns with the bereaved ones in their great loss and sorrow.

OBITUARY

Sarah Frances Perkins was born September 16, 1861, in Lynn county, Mo., near the town of Simmons, and departed this life June 5, 1918, at Wichita, Kansas. She was married to Geo. W. Reed Feb. 27, 1882 at Winfield, Kansas. To this union four children were born, Mrs. Nellie Moore of Sitka, Kans., Chas. Reed of Protection, Clifford Reed and Mrs. Geneva Fluke of Crawford, Colorado.

She leaves to mourn her loss her husband and their two sons and two daughters, four brothers and one sister, beside numerous friends who will greatly miss the loving smile and good deeds of Mrs. Reed. No woman has been called from our midst that could be missed more than she. Her life was one open book to all that came in contact with her and to know Mrs. Reed was to love her, and as we write these words come to us:

She was a good woman,
With a good woman's heart,
She was a mother
Who had done her part.

And when there came a parting of the ways, she left beloved memories for life's sad days. A large concourse of friends followed her to her last resting place where we laid her to rest beneath a bed of roses and beautiful flowers, and we thought "Sweet be thy rest." While our hearts are sad and heavy with grief because she is gone we know it is well with her and she is happy in her heavenly home. We will miss her and long for her but only a little while and we will pass over to meet her where parting is never known. Therefore loved and grief stricken ones at home, look up and hope, believe her happy and free from care and pain. She loved you and you know that none ever loved you better.

She was a devoted wife and a dear loving mother and these words are true to her:

M for the million things she gave me,
O is only that she is growing old,
T is for the tears she shed to save me,
H is for a heart of purest gold,
E is that she loves me ever,
R is for right and right she'll always be.

Put it all together and they spell "MOTHER, the dearest name in all the world.
A Friend
