W. T. Reed, who was a resident of Coldwater for a number of years prior to 1919, died at his home in Colorado Springs, Colo., on January 13, after a lingering illness. He had not been in good health for several years, his moving from this city about five years ago being principally with the hope of thus benefiting his health. For a time he seemed to grow some better, but no permanent relief could be found, even in the fine climate of Colorado. His suffering was borne with remarkable patience and he retained to the last his hopeful and cheerful outlook upon life.
Mr. Reed was a splendid type of citizen - honest, law abiding, generous, and stood at all times for the highest ideals of living. During Mr. and Mrs. Reed's five or more years' residence in this city they won many warm friends. They conducted the opera house and picture show business, and in all their business relations they never wavered from the principles of absolutely honest business methods and service of the highest order. Mrs. Reed has the sincere sympathy of many Coldwater friends in her hour of severe bereavement. From the Colorado Springs Daily of January 15, we quote as follows relative to Mr. Reed's sickness and death:
Following an illness of years standing W. T. Reed, well known and much respected West Side resident died at his home at 2118 West Colorado avenue Tuesday at 3 a.m. The funeral will be held this afternoon from Trinity M. E. church, and this morning many friends are calling at the residence to offer their sincere sympathy to Mrs. Reed and view the remains at the home.
Mr. and Mrs. Reed came here from Coldwater, Kansas, five years ago for the health of the former, who was then unable to be about except on crutches and with difficulty. They planned to remain only a few weeks, but Mr. Reed improved so rapidly that they decided to stay, and have done so. Later, with the possibility of relocating, they made a trip to the east coast sojourning in 11 states, but returned to Colorado Springs as the most desirable residence place.
Mr. Reed for a time was able to abandon his crutches and got about with a cane only. He made large numbers of strong friends, who regret his passing. He was a man of exceptional character, strong personality and earned a place of high standing in the community. The expression of regret was general along the avenue and in the West Side homes at the news of his death. His last decline started in June and from the fore part of July his condition became such as to alarm his relatives and friends. Four weeks ago he began to lose vitality rapidly and Wednesday a week ago his condition became most serious, the end coming the following Tuesday.
Besides his wife Mr. Reed is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Reed, of Baldwin City, Kans., a brother, Rev. C. N. Reed, of Ripley, New York, and a sister, Mrs. E. B. Irvin, of Bird City, Kansas. The later with her husband was here at the services, but the parents and brother were unable to come on account of illness.
