SCHWADER - At the home of his son, Karl Schwader, near Coldwater, Kansas, on Wednesday, February 24, 1904, Henry Schwader, Sr., aged 73 years, 5 months and 11 days.The deceased had been a constant sufferer for two years from bleeding cancer, the disease finally reaching the lower part of the alimentary canal. Although his suffering was at times severe he bore his affliction with remarkable fortitude and patience. Death came as a welcome relief from his sufferings. All that medical skill could do proved futile in checking or curing the disease. At 8 p.m. on Wednesday of last week he quietly passed away. He had been unconscious for some time.
Burial took place in the Coldwater cemetery on Friday. Rev. J.J. Bagsley, of the Presbyterian church, conducted brief funeral services at the cemetery. A large number of the friends and neighbors of the deceased was in attendance at the funeral.
Henry Schwader was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, on September 13, 1830. On October 24, 1857, he was married to Miss Hannah Feil, who, with seven sons and two daughters, survive him. Mr. Schwader and his family came to America from Germany in the fall of 1884. In November, 1885, they settled near Abilene, Kansas, where they found friends awaiting their arrival. In the spring of 1885 they came to Comanche-co. and filed on a claim. They remained here for several years and then returned to Dickinson-co., where they lived for a few years and then moved to Oklahoma to live with their son, Karl. Soon afterwards Mr. Schwader returned to Comanche-co. to take charge of J. M. Lobaugh's sheep ranch. He proved a good shepherd and remained in Mr. Lobaugh's employ for 5 years, after which he moved to where he had since lived and where he died. Since last September he had been unable to leave his bed but little. Loving hands administered to his wants until the end. All the children, except one son, August, who still resided in Germany, were summoned to his bedside four weeks ago and lovingly did all in their power to alleviate the father's suffering.
Four sons-- John, Fred, Henry and Karl -- still reside in this county. Besides raising a large family he reared three grandchildren -- John and Freddie Schwader and Mrs. Henry Hoppe. Henry Schwader was a man of sterling worth, honest and trustworthy in all his dealings. He had many warm friends. The grief stricken wife and bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community.
