John Schultz of Coldwater is in receipt of the following letter regarding the seriousness of the scrap iron shortage."Dear Mr. Schultz,
The grim prospect of crippling steel furnaces shut down due to critical shortage of scrap iron has endangered the Kansas Highway Commission's twenty year highway program. Some steel mills are already down to less than one day's supply of scrap. We cannot build highways without steel.
I urge every trucker in Kansas to unearth every available pound of scrap and get it to moving to your scrap yards in your local vicinity. I suggest that the truckers give special attention to the scrapping of worn our engines, truck frames, etc.
I wish to commend the industry for the fine scrap recovery job it has already done. This is an emergency situation and must be promptly met or curtailment of steel production will result, a serious consequence to both the defense effort and our state highway program. I hope that you will pay special attention to this emergency appeal and that you will appeal to your neighbors and friends to help.
