Harry Rodgers Sherman was born in Coldwater, Kans., on November 10, 1888, and died in Denver, Colo., on March 5, 1906, after an illness of only four days. The immediate cause of death was pronounced by the hospital physician to be spinal meningitis. The body arrived in Protection on last Friday afternoon and burial took place at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Rev. I. W. Bailey of the Baptist church conducted the funeral services. His words were appropriate and full of comfort for the sorrowing hearts. The Odd Fellows lodge of Protection had charge of the burial exercises. Although the weather was inclement the attendance at the funeral was quite large, about forty carriages being in line. There was a spontaneous and united expression on the part of the people of Protection and vicinity of the high esteem in which the deceased was held.The STAR is permitted to print here with the letter written from Denver to Mrs. Sherman soon after Harry's death by his roommate Geo. Protection, Kans.My Poor Friend: Ere this the sad news of your son's death has reached you, but knowing a mothers' heart, I feel that perhaps a few words from me will help you understand matters. Harry was taken sick the 1st and on the 2nd I had him sent to the hospital. Almost from the first he was out of his mind, hence he did not suffer as greatly as might be surmised. I did not know he was so bad until this morning when I had a telephone message that he was dying. Thank God I arrived in time to be with him at the last. He was unconscious all the time he was sick and so could send you no messages. Perhaps it was better so. I have been his friend since he was here and tried to be until the last. He went to church with me and I firmly believe God has only taken him to Himself. May He who heals all wounds and is the comforter of the afflicted help you in your trouble. If there is anything I can do or any questions you want to ask do not hesitate to do so, and believe me.
