Christopher William Singleton

OBITUARY

Christopher William Singleton was born at St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 21, 1851, and departed this life at Wilmore, Kan., October 16, 1931, at the age of 80 years and 25 days.

While a small child, Mr. Singleton moved with his parents to Norfolk, Va., where they lived during the Civil War days. From Norfolk they returned to St. Louis, where he spent his young manhood. In 1878 he loved to Greeley, Kan. Here he was the first agent for the Missouri Pacific railway and served in this capacity for nine years. The next nine years were spent in the Greeley State Bank which he helped to organize. Following this he spent nine years as manager of a hardware store in Greeley. It was during his stay in Greeley that Mr. Singleton met Miss Elizabeth Rupp, who became his wife on Sept. 15, 1880. To this union two children were born, Mrs. R. O. Nevens of Wilmore, Kan., and C. B. Singleton, St. Louis, Mo.

In 1905 the Singleton family moved to Tulsa, Okla. At that time Tulsa was a city of only seven thousand. Mr. Singleton entered the real estate business and for twenty years had a prominent part in the upbuilding of the city. In 1927 he retired from active participation in this business, and has spent the last few years of his life with his son and daughter. Mrs. Singleton passed away on June 5, 1924.

Mr. Singleton was a member of the of the First Methodist Church of Tulsa until 1928, when he moved his membership to Wilmore. He was greatly interested in the erection of the new church having been a builder most of his life, and was a very liberal and cheerful giver toward the success of the project. During the last few years of his life, Mr. Singleton often referred to the pleasantness of his religion experiences and when death came so peacefully, he was fully prepared to meet his Master.
