C. A. Whelpley Dies At the Age of 74

Funeral services for Clarence A. Whelpley were held on Monday, September 4, 1967, at 2:00 p.m. at the Methodist church in Coldwater. Rev. Major W. Parker, Ashland officiated. Mrs. Don Kerstetter, organist, accompanied Mrs. Bob Brass who sang "Peace in the Valley" and "Be Still My Soul."

Pallbearers were Norman Hadley, Richard Devoe, Bob VanVranken, Bob Gilchrist, W. N. Parsons and Charles Burt, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Vernon Pepperd, Charles W. Burt, Ernest Parker, Walter Deyoe, Harold Herd and Harry Kropf.

Military services were in charge of the American Legion and V. F. W. Posts of Coldwater. Chuck Burt sounded taps.

Interment was in the Crown Hill cemetery.

Obituary.

Clarence Arthur Whelpley, son of James Edward Whelpley and Shara Jane Anderson was born on November 21, 1892, at Oberlin, Kans., and departed this life on September 2, 1967, at the Coldwater Pioneer Lodge. He was orphaned at the age of 12. His childhood was spent in the community of Council Grove, Bushton and Ellinwood.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1912 and saw service through World War I.

The next few years after the war he worked as a Licensed Engineer and Fireman with the Railroad.

Clarence came to Coldwater and later was united in marriage to Elsie Ellen Baker in July 1924.

To this marriage was born three sons, Robert Edgar, Donald Edward and Glenn Arthur who preceded his father in death at an early age.

Until health curtailed his activities he was engaged in farming and other businesses in Coldwater.

He was a faithful proud, and diligent worker in the American Legion for 42 years. He served as Commander in 1939. Even in his failing years he never missed attending the memorial services at the Crown Hill Cemetery.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Elsie, February, 1959, and brother, Charles W., two sisters, Caddie Thornton, and Nora bell. He is survived by two sons, Robert Edgar, McPherson, Kansas, and Donald Edward, Oklahoma City, Okla. Two sisters, Laura King, LaJunta, Colo., and Fae Korf, Garden City, Kans. One brother, Clifford Neal, Ontario, and five grandchildren.
