Last Sunday Mr. and Mrs. John Herd of Coldwater and Mr. and Mrs.George Herd , who live southwest of Coldwater, were the dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wimmer of Protection. In the afternoon they had a private exhibition by Mr. and Mrs. George Herd's son-in-law, Mr. Wimmer, and his three year old filly. The beautiful brown mare with its blaze face and sleek sides and back was raised by Mr. Wimmer, and from the time it was a yearling colt he has patiently trained it to perform more than 30 tricks, all by the spoken word only, and without the use of a whip.
The horse will sit up, lie down, play dead, balance itself on its back like a dog, lie in any position or roll over. Standing beside it, when Robert puts his right or left foot forward, the horse will do likewise.
As a high school horse, she will step high, even without music, waltz backward, forward and sidewise, and with feet close together and head lowered dejectedly, assume a perfect "End of the Trail" pose.
When Mr. Wimmer ties his knees together, the intelligent filly, which has been named "Flicka," will come to his master's rescue and untie the rope and hand the end of it to Robert. And when her own front feet are tied tightly together, using a hard knot, she will unite the knot with her teeth and free herself.
This gentle well-trained equine will rear up and act mean, but is good natured under the kindly treatment of this young farmer who has just "picked up" how to train a horse. Flicka will count her age and the days of the week, but says she works only six days weekly. But we are certain she works her brain a lot.
The annual Coldwater Rodeo will be held this year on Saturday and Sunday, July 19 and 20, at the rodeo grounds one mile west of the water tower in this city. The Coldwater Roping Club, the sponsoring group, have lined up a good program of calf roping, ribbon roping, bull riding and matched horse racing.
As an added attraction Robert Wimmer and his educated horse "Flicka," will perform to the delight of all who attend the rodeo.
On Saturday, July 19, a new 1947 Plymouth automobile will be given away by the Veterans Memorial Building Association and the following day the Roping Club will give away a Shetland pony with saddle and bridle.
