Mr. Joe Winn quietly passed away at his home here last Thursday afternoon at 12:15 p.m. Mr. Winn better, known as "Grandpa," had been confined to his home for almost a year. The immediate cause of his death was given as heart trouble.Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Christian church with Rev. G. M. Martin in charge.
A quartet composed of Lloyd Bond, Delmar Horner, J. O. Freshour and W. C. Monticue sang "Old Rugged Cross," "Going Down the Valley," "Good Night Down Here, Good Morning Up There, " and "Where He Leads Me I Will Follow."
The pall bearers were Con Kirk, Ernest Fitzwater, Creed Dodson, G. C. Carter, Olin Millam, and J. E. Decker.
The following obituary was read:
Joe Winn, son of James and Nancy Winn, was born June 29, 1855, at West Fork, Washington County, Arkansas, and departed this life at his home in Protection at the age of 80 years, 7 months and 8 days. His parents died when he was quite young and at the age of 16 years he went west. He spent 12 years of his early life in Colorado, Texas, and Arizona. He was converted and baptized in the Baptist church at the age of 20 in which he continued in this faith until his passing. He said till the very last that there was not a straw between him and Heaven.
In 1883 he returned to Washington County, Ark., where he was married to Maggie Martin on August 4, 1890. To this union was born 11 children. Two children preceded him in death.
Mr. Winn moved to Missouri at an early date, then to Coffee (Coffey) County, Ks., from there to Chase, Kansas in 1905. In 1910 he moved to Comanche county. In 1917 while his 3 sons were serving in the World War, he moved to Baca County, Colo., where he proved up a claim. In 1926 he moved back to Protection where he spent the remainder of his life.
He has been practically bedfast for the past year. He was always jolly and cheerful and loved company to the very last.
He leaves to mourn his departure his loving and faithful wife and nine children, Lem of Oberlin, Kans.; John of Chappell, Nebr.; Maude Butler of Englewood, Kans.; Myrtle Booth of Ashland, Kans.; Lena Hazen of Coldwater, Kans.; Edith Hazen, Cale Charley, and Mildred Winn of Protection, Kans.; 26 grandchildren; two brothers of Winslow, Ark., and a host of other relatives and friends.
All the children were present at this service except John.
He is buried in the Protection Cemetery, Protection, Kansas.
