Established February 1867. The territory had previously been included in Marion County. The county was expanded northward March 20, 1873 into Hodgeman County. On February 22, 1883 Ford absorbed all of Clark and eastern parts of Meade and Gray Counties. On March 13, 1885 Meade and Clark were re-established and Gray was re-established March 23, 1887.
The
first Fort Atkinson was situated on the Santa Fe Trail about six
miles west of the present town of Dodge City. The troops there were
transferred to Walnut Creek (near the present town of Great Bend) and
the post office changed names. The original name was resumed in 1855.
