1880 Mortality Schedule

The 1880 mortality schedules included deaths in each township one year previous to May 31, 1880; in other words, persons who died between June 1, 1879, and May 31, 1880. However, some of the deaths recorded here fall outside those dates, according to cemetery records and obituaries from the time.
The family number, where available, refers to the numbering system used within the township in the 1880 Census. Not all enumerators recorded this information in the mortality schedule. The family numbers were also very hard to read so may not be entirely accurate.
I left out the category for race since all those enumerated in the Mortality Schedule were white. There were certainly black settlers in the county at this time, but either they suffered no losses or, more likely, were not asked or chose not to give the information.
Residency is the amount of time this person lived in Lincoln County.
A question mark next to an entry means that I was fairly sure of my transcription but not positive.
With the exception of Pleasant and Highland Township, which was done as a group, I used copies of the microfilm of the original census pages to compile this information. I then used a previous compilation by Thelma Carpenter and Helen Franklin for the Highland Township information as well as to check my transcription of the other townships.
In general, the original writing is very difficult to read and some names were nearly impossible to make out. While some of my information differs from the earlier compilation, I certainly had advantages those two women did not: the online 1880 Census now available, courtesy the Church of Latter Day Saints, at www.familysearch.org, a better familiarity with the county's surnames as well as access to cemetery and obituary information.
Because I have also compiled a listing of burials for Lincoln County, I took the liberty of adding one piece of information not recorded on the original census: the place of burial. In the late 1870s, however, cemeteries were just beginning to be established around Lincoln County. Many of these people's graves'whether they were interred within the boundaries of a newly mapped country cemetery or on the old homestead'remain unmarked.
