The Skinner Family of Lincoln County Kansas
Skinner Family of Lincoln County Kansas
submitted by Ginny (V. L.) Kane
In November of 1866 Darius Calvin SKINNER was discharged from the Colorado Cavalry in Leavenworth, Kansas. Not long after that his brother, Thoms Everton SKINNER, was discharged in the same place. Coming east from Colorado they had passed through what would become Lincoln County, Kansas, and decided to settle there. Darius went back to the banks of the Saline River and built a dugout and Thomas went to fetch his wife and young family who had been staying with another brother, Dr. John Osborn SKINNER, in Des Moines, Iowa. Dr. John had been a surgeon during the conflict stationed in the east and the ladies felt they would do better together than either of them would alone.
Thus in 1867 Thomas Everton SKINNER and his wife, Mary Maria BING SKINNER moved into the dugout Darius built and set up housekeeping. They had three sons with them: Bing John SKINNER, born 3 June 1857; Everton Thomas SKINNER, born 7 September 1859, and Alfred Ernest SKINNER, born 10 October 1862. This was the beginning of my family's life in Lincoln County. They lived just south of where Beverly would soon flourish. Thomas and Darius SKINNER homesteaded adjoining parcels.
In a genealogical format the family looked like this:
