The Founding of Barnard

The new town of Barnard was partly surveyed and laid off in lots last week. All of the town now surveyed is in Scott township, in the southeast quarter of section 12, and the northeast quarter of section 13, on the I.A. Ballard and Davis King farms. It is now owned or controlled by the Kaw Valley Town Co., so we understand. We learn that they have fixed the price of lots from $60 to $300.

Loy's addition is in the northwest quarter of section 18, in Salt Creek township, directly east and on the same kind of land, and only a short distance from the railroad station where now located. He expects to have it surveyed this week, and offers to sell lots for from $20 to $60 per lot.

This is business and we hope that all who contemplate locating in the new town of Barnard will take advantage of Mr. Loy's more liberal terms. Let everyone in the township of Salt Creek take hold and help boom their own side of the town, as we have no need of going outside of the township to do business.

BARNARD, U. S. A.

Is located 19 miles, by rail, northwest of Minneapolis;16 miles northeast of Lincoln; 22 miles southeast of Beloit. It is in Scott township, Lincoln Co., Kan, and is the best town in Salt creek valley. This valley is one of the real beauty-spots of Kansas, some fifty miles long by two and three wide, and quite thickly settled with farmers and ranchers.
The population of Barnard is about 250, and they are the liveliest two fifty you ever saw. Following is a list of the lines of business represented:

2 Restaurants
2 Elevators
2 Doctors
Creamery
Livery Stable
Barber
Butcher
Wagon shop
Drayman

No, there's no joint. We have a fine large school house and two churches, Presbyterian and Baptist. There is a congregation of Methodists, but they have no place of meeting of their own, using that of the Presbyterians. The Masons, Oddfellows, Rebekahs, Woodmen and Knights and Ladies of Security all have local organizations. There are no bonds of any kind out against Barnard. The town is entirely out of debt -- Just make a note of that. We have the usual telephone connections. Now, if Barnard is not a good enough place for you, tell us what you want and we will buy it for you.

"High Water" From the Barnard Bee, June 11, 1908

Our little city came out very lucky in the recent high water. Heavy rain Saturday night and early Sunday morning threatened to give us another inundation as bad as that of four years ago. To make matters worse about 8 o'clock Sunday morning, while the rain was coming down in torrents the wind rose and was soon blowing a gale. It had all the indications of a coming tornado. After a few moments however, it quieted down. By this time the Rattlesnake and Salt Creek were out of their banks in places, and east of Barnard was soon flooded. A few families moved out while there was yet time. The two bridges west of town were badly damaged, but both are still passable. The big stone 3-arch bridge in the north-east part of town seemed to stand the strain nobly.

Sunday evening at about 7 o'clock, with the creeks over the banks as stated, the western horizon became overcast with a frightful looking bluish-green storm cloud, which appeared to be approaching at a very rapid rate. It seemed to be the unanimous opinion of all that a disastrous flood, accompanied by a probably fatal wind, would soon be upon us. The storm came on rapidly, looking more vicious the nearer it approached. But strange to say, when it arrived there was very little wind or rain in it, and all were very much surprised, and equally thankful to find in a short time that the danger had passed so soon.

In our untiring efforts to gather news for our readers, and regardless of expense, we chartered a special train and at 12:30 p.m. Sunday we left the Santa Fe tool house with Chas. EBERLY as chief engineer, Clarke EBERLY assistant. The company being rather short of rolling stock, they let us have a car the motive power of which is produced by operating an apparatus similar to a Corliss engine. It was a lovely trip and one long to be remembered. At least we haven't got over it yet; every muscle in our body is sore.

From the first bridge east of town clear through to Brewer, 15 miles, there was water on all sides. The track seemed to be in fairly good condition until we reached Milo. There we found about 200 yards of track under water, the current being very rapid across the track from south to north. Several bridges were much weakened. It was generally conceded that it would be unsafe for a train to pass, yet train made the trip to Manchester the next morning, Monday; but it was precarious work.

John McCULLOUGH, a mile or so east of Ada, had 200 acres of wheat under water. All the way down the valley on both sides large fields of wheat, corn and alfalfa were flooded. We don't believe there was much livestock lost. One dead hog at Milo was the extent of damage of this kind that came under our notice on the trip. Yet it was reported that two cows floated down Salt creek, but we have not been able to verify that report.

Frank LEWIS had about a hundred rods of 4-foot Page wire fence, rock posts and all, woshed out. He is also probably one of the heaviest losers of crops in the community.

We understand that E.M. SNOOKS lost about 150 small chickens. Mr. TUTTLE lost about 75.

We were told there are two bridges out between Will PAGAN's and John PIERCE's. The Loy bridge was made impassible on account of a washout of one of the approaches. The north-east wing of the Donovan bridge was washed away. The approaches to the stone arch bridge on the old J.L. MORE place was badly damaged. The bridge on third creek near the SWANK place was washed away several days ago, but was reset and wall wired so that it stood the strain Sunday.


 

 

How Barnard Got Its Name

Through the courtesy of L.F. Martin, local agent at the Santa Fe Depot, we have received the information that Barnard was named after J.F. Barnard, former General Manager of the Kansas City, St. Jo and Council Bluff Railway. The information was secured from a map of the railroad and Barnard townsite, dated Sept. 26, 1887. In one corner of the faded blue print the above information was written in white ink and there is no doubt whatever but that Barnard secured its name from that above source. At the time the blue print was made, the Manchester-Barnard branch at least was a part of the Chicago Kansas and Western Railroad. We are indeed grateful to Mr. Martin to this information, and have passed it onto our readers with the idea that it will prove interesting to them.

Discontinues


"Barnard Bee Discontinues"

With last week's issue, the Barnard Bee, one of Lincoln county's four newspapers, discontinued publication and that community will now be without its own newspaper. H.S. Wadham, for nearly 10 years owner and publisher of the Bee, has been at the Norton Sanitarium for the past several weeks and since then his paper was been printed at Lincoln and distributed at Barnard.

Owing to circumstances, Mr. and Mrs. Wadham felt it was impossible to continue the arrangement and sold their subscription list to the Lincoln County News.

The Barnard Bee closed with volume 41, number 26, indicating that the paper had been published for nearly 41 years.


 

Barnard Post Office History


"Barnard Post Office established 100 years ago"

It's centennial time at the Barnard Post Office next week, reports Postmaster Marjorie Maholland. Cake and coffee will be served patrons and friends in an all-day open house Friday, May 21, in observance of the insitution's 100th year.

Doing a bit of research on her own, Mrs. Maholland learned that it was 100 years ago May 18, 1882, that the first United States Post Office was established at Nimrod, with Isaac A. Ballard as its postmaster. Six years and four days later, May 22, 1888, the federal government changed the site to Barnard and named William A. Smith postmaster.

According to Mrs. Maholland, this information was verified by the U.S. Postal Service, Bureau of Archives, Washington, D.C., just a few days ago in answer to her inquiry.

Today, the Barnard Post Office serves 76 customer-patrons at its window and inside boxes; there are 124 rural route patrons. In addition to the postmaster, the staff includes Virginia Montgomery, clerk; Bill Biggs, rural carrier; and Leo Wallace, substitute carrier.

Mrs. Maholland, who has been Postmaster since 1976, said that the present native stone building housing the postal service at Barnard was built in 1960. The Barnard Post Office has been situated in several different bildings in various locations since it was established a century ago.
