Excerpt from a letter written 22 Jan 1938 by Lemont Hubbell to Herman C. Colegrove, Dept. Commander USWV Kansas 1937-8.
"Now, Herman, after these many years that have passed by and filled with the activities of life other than military, and especially since the 10th day of February 1899 when we captured the cannon from the Philipinos in our advance on Calloocan on that date. I remember very vividly that prior to the formation of the battle, in fact through-out most of the night before, the insurgents kept up a constant or intermittent rifle fire, interspersed with an occasional shot from a cannon which proved to be the very one they used in the battle of Calloocan the following day and which was captured by our company. I am glad that you have an active interest in the preservation of the cannon. I hope you can get the cannon placed in Memorial Hall at Salina, the birthplace of Company M."

BISHOP, Captain William H. wounded in leg in action Rio Grand River, 26 April 1899, returned to duty 24 May 1899. Died 15 March 1930 at Tucson, AZ, buried there. A son, Glen L. of Salina and his daughter, Charmain Landsdonne of Los Angeles, CA. Survive.
KING, John L. First Sergeant, Minneapolis. Died 30 July 1934/35 at Calexico, CA., buried there. Slightly wounded 10 Feb. 1899, not reported. His brother is at Russell Springs.

BRICK, Elmer, Salina, died 8 Nov. 1920 at Salina where he is buried. Widow, Lillian. Was slightly wounded 10 Feb. 1899 but not reported.

Marshfield, buried at Marshfield. Widow, Ellen and family live at Empire where
he was a rancher.
NEFF, Harry L., Salina, (Seattle WA.) died 18 July 1938, was clerk at Seattle’s Lincoln Hotel.
RIPPLE, Noah P., New Cambria, born 16 June 1850 in PA., died 17 Sept. 1932 at home of niece, Mrs. D.W. Rockholt. Wife was deceased. Nearest of kin are nieces and nephews. Retired farmer. Buried Donmyer cemetery near New Cambria.
CARLSON, Alfred, Marqueette, died 16 Oct. 1932, Pueblo, CO., buried there and wife, Ella M. remained there.
ELLISON, Gaffree, Lindsborg, died 22 Dec. 1932 at Norman, OK., buried there, wife Nettie lives there. Was a highly honored Bacteriologist for the state of Oklahoma for several years prior to his death. Slightly wounded 10 Feb. 1899 but not reported.
CLARK, Samuel R., Salina, cook (c/o Clark’s Market, Mojave, CA) reported deceased prior to 1 Jan. 1929.
MOSHER, Frank C., Salina, artificer, born 16 Nov. 1874 near Bennington, died 8 April 1949 Wadsworth Veterans Hospital. Retired Salina druggist. His wife, Nellie, died 16 Sept. 1939. Enlisted for Spanish American War in the spring of 1898 and served until the fall of 1899 in CA. And the Philippine insurrection. Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Salina.

BATTERSBY, George M., Salina (Lost Gatos, CA.) retied by 1938. Wounded in arm 5 Feb., returned to duty 1 Mar. 1899.
BENNETT, Charles, W./B. Enterprise, (Topeka) is a plumber. Attended 1935 reunion. Wounded in thigh, not off duty.
BENNER, Charles H., Bennington. Died Feb. 1908 at Bennington where buried. His mother stil living there at his death. Sick report with diarrhea 4 Sept. 1899.

COE, Palmer N., Salina (Kansas City, KS) Authorized attorney for Veterans Administration, Kansas. Died 23 Feb. 1946.
CROSSEN/CROSSON, Charles E. Minneapolis, died April 1951 age 79 at Veterans Administration Hospital, Topeka. He had arranged his funeral to the last minute detail, dictating that he was to be clad in his military attire and a pair of handmade Chinese leather shoes. Forty-one years after he was mustered out from the Spanish American War, he received the pay amounting to $378.02. With this he purchased his steel vault and the three Masonic emblems for his marker. Earlier he had made his beautifully hand-hewn coffin out of solid walnut, prepared his own cemetery on 50 square feet of ground acquired for that purpose, and spent four years hewing his tomb out of solid rock. He completed that in 1936. The one-man cemetery is on the south bank of Pipe Creek not far from Minneapolis with a view of the territory he roamed as a boy. To insure privacy Crosson obtained a 99 year lease on the roadway leading to his private burial ground. He was slightly wounded 4 Feb. 1899.
CUNNINGHAM, Fred A., Salina, died 27 May 1927 at South City, San Francisco, CA. Buried there. Widow Anna M. He was mayor of the city for several years prior to his death. He was a member of the board of managers for Worlds Fair in San Francisco and very prominent at the time of the great fire.
FORD, Arthur R., New Cambria (Fort Sumner, NM) rancher. Died 7 March 1956. Diarrhea convalescent 4 Sept. 1899.
HANSON/HANCIN, John, Assaria (1929, Salina). Died 28 Sept. 1949 at Veterans Hospital in Wichita, buried in the American Legion plot in Old Mission Cemetery there.
HALDERMAN, Charles B. Salina (1929 at Concordia). Died 6 March 1938 at Salina, buried in Bethel cemetery north of Glasco. Widow lives at Glasco.

there. Widow, Edna L. lived in Topeka in 1929. Slightly wounded 24 May 1899.
KAUFMAN, Harry J., Salina (Santa Barbara, CA) Typewriter salesman and expert.
KING, James W., Minneapolis (Russell Springs, retired) His brother John L. King was a major in World War I. Attended 1935 reunion.
KISSLING, Oliver, Salina, born 12 July 1878 on farm near Salina, son of Fred Kissling, died 4 Jan. 1936 at Glendale, AZ. Survivors are widow Emily, their five children, Oliver Jr., Juanita, George, William and Richard; his mother, Mrs. John Harri of Phoenix AZ; one sister, Mrs. Herbert Simmons, Salina.
LAIRD, John I., Minneapolis, died 12 Nov. 1929 at Minneapolis, buried there. Widow, Earnestine, lives there. He was sheriff of Ottawa County.
LANDWEHR, William, Salina, died 29 April 1917 at Veterans Hospital, Wadsworth, is buried in cemetery there at the home. Widow, Ann Weichold lives in Kansas City, two daughters also survive.
MILLER, William H., Salina (Wilson) rancher. Died 15 July 1939.
MORRISON, Sidney M., Salina, wounded in leg, Caloocan, Feb. 10, 1899, returned to duty 20 May 1899. Died 8 Sept. 1903 at Hoisington from wounds received in action. Buried at Hoisington where sister survives. Mother is Mrs. Clara Morrison of Great Bend.

WILSON, Samuel L., Salina, killed 29 March 1899, buried Battery Knoll No. 235. Was born Ogle Co. IL, 20 yrs. Old at death, resident of KS 14 years. Enlisted with his brother, Clyde, sons of Mr. And Mrs. W.O. Wilson. Killed at battle of Guiguinto, Philippine Islands. Joint funeral with Henry H./W. Morrison at Presbyterian Church, Salina, buried Gypsum Hill Cemetery there.
MORRISON, Henry H./W., Salina, killed in action at the Rio Grand, Luzon, 28 Arpil 1899. Died from wounds received in battle at Apalit, Philippine Islands, buried Gypsum Hill cemetery, Salina, after double funeral with Samuel L. Wilson at Salina’s Presbyterian church. Born 14 Dec. 1873 at Salina, son of Hugh H. and Rebecca S. Elwell Morrison.
