The following complete obituary of the late Samuel J. Butts appeared in last week's issue of The Mulvane News, which will be of interest to Mr. Butts' many friends in Comanche County.Samuel Jones Butts was born November 22, 1842, at Bristol, Ind., and passed away at Mulvane, Kansas, September 15, 1932, at the age of 89 years, nine months and seven days.
He was the eldest son of Jacob and Susan Butts being a member of a family of twelve children. His father died when he was a small boy leaving him and his mother the burden to carry and assume the responsibilities of caring for a large family. At the age of 17 years he left his widowed mother, brothers and sisters, enlisted in the Civil War in Company C, 9th Indiana regiment and after four years of service he returned to his boyhood home to live with his mother.
At the age of 21 he united with the United Brethren Church of Bristol, Indiana, of which his mother had been a long and faithful member.
In a short time he felt the call of the west, and went first to Missouri and then to Kansas. He arrived in Sedgwick County in the early winter of 1870 settling at Waco, Kansas, where he was the pioneer merchant serving the freighters to the Indian territory.
He pre-empted on the homestead two miles west of Mulvane which he still owns and occupied until 21 years ago when he retired from active farming and moved to Mulvane where he has since resided.
He united in marriage to Emma Parker, February 11, 1885, daughter of the late William and Eliza Parker of near Peck, Kansas. To this union were born six children, the eldest dying in infancy. The late Forrest S. Butts preceded him in death four years ago on September 14, 1928. The surviving children are Carey Parker Butts of Mulvane, Ray S. of Protection, Pluma Waters, Protection, and Sue Gardiner of Valley Center.
He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, two sons, two daughters, eight grandchildren, one brother, J. D. Butts of Cherokee, Okla.; one sister, Libby Brunner of Cassopolis, Mich.
Mr. Butts' life with his children has been one of firmness, yet marked with such patient, gentle solicitude for what he deemed their best interest, that he gained and retained an influence over them that any parent might wish to have.
By a life of upright, honest citizenship he has, won many friends who bow their heads in sorrow for the true friend they have lost.
