View larger image of Directory of Burials.About this web page: The following list contains information from gravestone readings made by Mary Ehret Holler, Karen Jarnagin and other members of the Protection community.
Dave Webb and Susan Edmonston (both of whom write for The Protection Press) have also been actively involved in the creation and maintenance of the directory of burials at the cemetery, pictured at left, and Dave has offered to provide a large image of the directory map to this website the next time he updates that image for display at the directory building.
This web page also includes information from obituaries found and transcribed by researcher Shirley Brier and from information published in Comanche County History.
This list of burials was fairly complete as of September 2004 when there were approximately 1,412 burials in the cemetery.
Be aware that there may be typographical errors in the following list of burials. Check the primary sources to confirm names and dates; this list is meant as a research guide and is no doubt imperfect, though it is presented as completely and accurately as possible according to information available to the html guy for this page.
In most if not all cases, you'll be able to find an obituary or death notice in either the The Protection Post or The Protection Press for anyone buried in this cemetery. In many cases, you'll also find obituaries or death notices published in other county newspapers, especially The Western Star. Back issues of county newspapers are available on microfilm.
Many of these individuals are the subject of, or are mentioned in, family histories published in Comanche County History. This list of burials has only been annotated up to surnames beginning with D for citations in Comanche County History, so check that source if you're researching someone buried here, even if you don't see the book cited as a source of information on this list.
To be certain that you're up to date on the latest burials in this cemetery, as well as on local news and events, subscribe to The Protection Press, P0 Box 567, Protection, KS 67127. Phone: (620) 622-4288. (Annual Subscriptions in 2004: $24.00 for Kansas addresses or $25.00 for out of state addresses.)
Thanks to everyone who has contributed information to the following list!

"Ernest George (E.G.) Osmon was the Protection depot agent for years. The Protection Post and The Western Star repeatedly misspelled his last name as Osman, but it was definitely Osmon. I'm still trying to figure out how he actually spelled his first name. He almost always went by E.G. The newspaper spelled it Ernest, but his tombstone is Earnest. I checked the courthouse and couldn't find any documents he signed with his full name. His son was George E. Osmon." -- Note from Dave Webb, 19 July 2005.Osmon, George E.
