Sunday evening the community was shocked by a telephone message from Wichita stating that Mrs. Chas. Foster had died at the Wichita hospital at one thirty that afternoon.Mrs. Foster was taken sick just a week ago Sunday and was taken to the Wichita hospital last Thursday. An operation being deemed necessary at once she underwent the ordeal Friday morning at eleven o'clock. She rallied somewhat but a mesenteric blood clot formed and Sunday morning her condition was so critical that the folks in Protection were telephoned to come at once. The trip by auto was taken up but the children and friends from Protection arrived too late. The body was brought home on Monday's train, being met by a large number of sorrowing friends and grief stricken neighbors.
The funeral read by Rev. G. M. Martin of the Christian church was held from the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. L. Osbourne, Tuesday afternoon and interment was made in the local cemetery.
Mrs. Foster was a rare woman. She was among the pioneer women of Clark and Comanche counties, a woman of rare patience, firm courage and beautiful spirit. A wife that walked hand-in-hand and filled her home with the peace, purity and beauty of her soul. A mother that instilled in her children the highest of ideals and ideas. Mrs. Foster was a neighbor ever faithful in all the duties and tasks of life. She never complained at the early hardships of pioneer life but enjoyed their home and children in their later years. She was a devout Christian woman of deep spiritual life, devoted to her Christ and firm in her faith.
Mrs. Foster will indeed be sadly missed in the Protection community, in her neighborhood, in her church and in her home.
OBITUARY Mary E. Crockett was born in the state of Indiana, September 20, 1859.

Mrs. Foster died at the Wichita Hospital, Wichita, Kansas, June 25, 1916, aged 56 years, 9 months and 5 days.
The immediate cause of death was the result of an operation for appendicitis.
Mrs. Foster united with the Christian church at Ashland, Kansas, in January 1895, and was ever a faithful, consecrated Christian.
The body was laid to rest by loving hands in the local cemetery.
Pain at a shadow
On a bright summer day
Do we call this dying
Such a calm, sweet going away.
