Discussion of whether to proceed with publishing another Comanche County History Book was the main focus of the Comanche County Historical Society's annual meeting. Its president, Skip Herd of Coldwater, presided at the session which was held at the museum in Coldwater Sunday afternoon, November 14.It has been almost 25 years ago since the 785-page Comanche County History Book was published. Consensus among the group present was that another book should be started.
Every story submitted in 1980 was included in the Comanche County History Book. Families ought to update what was written 25 years ago -- an extension of what has happened since 1980. All families with Comanche County ties would have the opportunity to have their stories published. The history of businesses, schools, and clubs, old and new, would be updated, too.
To get a book ready for publication requires many volunteers. If you would like to help, please contact Skip Herd.
Discussed at the meeting were costs of publication, size of book dependant upon stories submitted, using computers for stories and photos, pre-sale of books, and media to use to alert the public about the possibility of an updated volume.
The annual meeting Sunday also included information about future plans for the museum. Some displays will be moved and others added as space is made available. Due to limited space, items being donated to the museum should have a historical significance to the county. Soon to be added is Florence Booth's extensive pencil collection.
Upkeep of the Comanche County Museum is maintained through membership dues, donations, and $2,500 alloted this year by the Comanche County Commissioners. At present, there is no tax mill to generate money for the museum.
The Comanche County Historical Society is sponsoring a tree which will soon be planted on the Courthouse lawn.
Dave Webb recently attended the state historical society meeting in Topeka. The membership from Comanche County is very low, and Dave encouraged others to join that organization.
Cassidy Puderbaugh drew numbers for the door prizes, which were donated by The Kansas State Historical Society.
The historical society will meet again on Thursday, December 2, at 7 p.m. to discuss the response of the public on doing another history book. If the feedback is positive, committees will be formed to proceed on this project.
