Mrs. John Hullet, aged 75 years, 8 months and 27 days, died at 11 o'clock p.m. on last Saturday, August 18, 1923, at her home in Protection. She had been in failing health for some time, but her condition was not considered serious. She was able to be about as usual on Saturday. Late in the evening, while she and Mr. Hullet were sitting on the porch she suddenly began to cough and to show signs of weakened heart action. In a few moments life became extinct. Her passing away was apparently without a struggle.Funeral services were conducted from the home at 4:30 p.m. on Monday and were in charge of Rev. G. M. Martin of the Protection Christian church. A large crowd listened to the impressive services and all hearts were moved to sorrow because of the passing away of a good neighbor, a kind, loving and devoted friend, wife and mother. The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful. Burial was in the Protection cemetery by the side of her son, Charley, who died less than two months ago.
Susan Elizabeth Kelley was born in Macoupin-co., Illinois, on November 22, 1847. On November 14, 1867, in Virden, Ill., she was united in marriage with John Hullet. The family continued to live in Illinois until 1889, when they came to Barber-co., Kansas. They lived on a ranch west of Medicine Lodge, and later on a farm and ranch a few miles south of Kiowa, until about 20 years ago, when they purchased and moved to a farm and ranch four miles southeast of Protection, this county. There they continued to live until about ten years ago, when they moved into Protection, and continued to make that city their home.
Mrs. Hullet was a woman who commanded the highest esteem, because of her kindly, sympathetic nature and her unceasing labors for the welfare of her family and friends. Hers was a life of loving and helpful service, and her countless ministrations of love have left with all who knew her sweet and precious memories. She labored through the changing scenes of pioneer life and worked bravely on with a firm faith that final triumph would reward the faithful. She lived and she died with her eyes fixed upon her Master. At an early age in life she was converted and became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and she never wavered in her devotion to the cause of Christ.
Besides the husband, Mrs. Hullet is survived by three sons and two daughters. They are: Mrs. J. J. Overstreet of Coldwater, Kans., John F. Hullet of Elreno, Okla. Fred B. Hullet of Sharon, Kans., Lester L. Hullet of Wichita, and Mrs. F. S. Butts of Protection, Kans. Three of the sons - Otis, aged 18 months, Clarence, aged 14 years, and Charley, aged 54 years - preceded their mother in death: All of the surviving children were present at the funeral.
