Abram Vanwey died at 9:30 p.m. on last Sunday, March 7, 1920, at his home five miles northwest of Protection, after a lingering illness, resulting from an abscess on one of his lungs. For three years or more he had sought relief, having spent some time receiving treatment in Wichita and having tried the healing properties of the waters at Hot Springs, Ark. Throughout all his sickness, however, he was a patient sufferer, never complaining, and when the end drew near he seemed perfectly ready to go. He died with a firm faith in Christ as a savior. He was a charter member of the Baptist church in Protection, and had lived consistently as a follower of the lowly Man of Galilee. Nearly 25 years ago, while living near Hennessey, Okla., he was converted and united with the U. B. church, but after his return to protection he changed his membership to the Baptist church. The funeral services were held from the Baptist church in Protection on Tuesday afternoon, the pastor, Rev. E. H. H. Tubbs, being in charge. The funeral sermon and every part of the service was very impressive and was heard by a large number of the neighbors and friends of the deceased. Interment was in the Protection cemetery, where his father, Abram Vanwey Sr., who died a little over 20 years ago, is also buried.Deceased was born in Lima, Ohio, on July 16, 1865. In the year 1867 the family moved from Ohio to Illinois, where they lived for about two years. In 1869 they moved to Kansas, settling near Burlington in Coffey-co. In the summer of 1885 they moved to Comanche-co., and settled on a farm four miles east of Protection. The family consisted of the father and mother and three sons - Sanford, Abram and Arthur. The mother, Aunt Rebecca, as she is familiarly called, and two brothers, Sanford and Arthur, survive.
In the passing away of Abe Vanwey Comanche-co. loses another good citizen and one of her early settlers. The family is one of the best known in the western half of the county. Except for about four years when he lived near Hennessey, Okla., Abe made his home continuously near Protection. Recently he sold his farm and purchased a good home in Protection, but had not yet moved thereto when death overtook him. From every one who had ever known Abe Vanwey may be heard expressions of the deepest sorrow because of his departure. It may truthfully be said of the deceased that he was a good citizen in every sense of the word. As a father, husband and neighbor he was kind and thoughtful. He was quiet and unostentatious, true to every obligation and a friend of all. At the time of his death Mr. Vanwey was 54 years, 7 months and 20 days of age. Besides his wife, mother and two brothers, he is survived by three children - Minnie, aged 21, Wilma, aged 16, and Oren, aged 14. Three children - Violet, Alberta and Walter preceded their father in death. The wife before her marriage to Mr. Vanwey in the year 1890, was Miss Ida Stewart. She and the bereaved children, and other relatives have the sincere sympathy of all in their hour of sad affliction.
