SILVER STAR AWARD TO LORIN D. BLISS
Extreme Bravery in Taking Strong Fortification Recognized.Pfc. Lorin D. Bliss, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bliss of Coldwater and holder of one of the highest awards of the U. S. Army, has re-enlisted in the regular army.
Pfc. Bliss saw three years service in the AUS, two of them spent in the European Theater of Operations. He is the wearer of the ETO ribbon, good conduct ribbon, combat infantry badge, three battle stars, Purple Heart and the Silver Star. He served with the Engineers. He has re-enlisted with the Engineers and has chosen to serve in the European Theater.
He has been on a 60 day leave visiting with his parents and brothers and sisters at Coldwater.
Following is the citation which has been given Pfc. Bliss:
"Lorin D. Bliss, 37720232, Private First Class, 87th Mountain Infantry, United States Army. For gallantry in action on 27 April 1945, near Garda, Italy. In advance along the shores of Lake Garda into a strongly defended town, Private First Class Bliss was a scout for the leading platoon. The enemy had installed a road block, defended by machine guns and a 20 mm artillery piece. Refusing to be halted, he pressed forward through the deadly fire to reach the first building of the town. There he assisted in the attack of a strong point, killing an enemy machine gunner before he had time to put his weapon into action against our forces. Then he and a comrade advanced on another building, under the protection of covering automatic rifle fire. The enemy laid down terrific machine gun and grenade fire at his position, but he gallantly exposed himself to return the fire, pinning down hostile defenders in a nearby building and soon forcing them to withdraw. By his aggressive actions in this phase of the battle, he enabled his platoon to gain a foothold in the enemy's defensives and lead the way for the capture of the town. Private First Class Bliss, by his heroic deeds, has proven himself worthy of the finest tradition of the United States Army."
Pfc. Bliss, as an infantry rifleman, was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for campaigns participated in the Battle of Germany. He has been in the army since December, 1943.

Lorin Dewayne Bliss
Lorin Dewayne Bliss, 55, of 2157 Victoria Ave., Fort Myers, died Sunday at his residence. He was born in Coyle, Okla., on Sept 19, 1923 and was employed locally as a carpenter and handyman.
He is survived by five brothers, Kenneth Bliss and John Bliss, both of Coldwater, Kan., and Donald Bliss of Alva, Okla., Glen Bliss of Enid, Okla. and Jack Bliss of Olathe, Colo., and five sisters, Mamie Brown, Maye Newkirch, Roberta Malone and Wilma Jean Cashwell, all of Coldwater, Kan., and Marie Lamb of Fresco, Calif.
Friends may call today at the Farley Funeral Home in Lehigh Acres from 7 to 9 p.m. The body will be sent to Coldwater, Kan., on Thursday for funeral and burial. Farley Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
