Robert E. Thompson

Robert E. Thompson, 21, 4504 Mainline Drive, was killed Sunday in an automobile accident 2 1/2 miles east of Hutchinson on US 50. Born November 21, 1951, at Coldwater, he married Judith Hamilton, July 10, 1970, at South Hutchinson. He was superintendent of Reno by-products Inc. and lived here since 1969.

He was a member of the National Guard.

Survivors include the widow; step-father: Delmer "Buck" Ferrin; father: John Thompson, Geneva, Ill.; half-brothers: Dan Ferrin and Meade Ferrin, Wilmore; Loren Ferrin, Ashland; grandparents: Mr. and Mrs. Vern Banker, Arlington; Mr. and Mrs. John Thompson, Coldwater; step-grandparents: Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Ferrin, Wilmore.

Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Elliot Chapel; Rev. Wesley Davis. Burial will be in the Arlington Cemetery.


Robert Edward Thompson is pictured on pages 31, 54 and 69 of Comanche County In Pictures. He played guitar and sang.

Ernest Leroy Ferrin - "Poppy" to Robert E. Thompson.

Jerry Ferrin - "Cousin Jerry" to Robert E. Thompson. Except for their own brothers, they were best friends to each other when they were children. Robby and Jerry got guitars at about the same time and often played together as they were learning to play. They played a few songs together for their Aunt Nellie once when they were all visiting Grandma Nellie and Poppy. Within a week of returning to her home, Aunt Nellie had sent each of them copies of a music book of folk songs, This Singing Land. (I still have my copy and can still play and sing most of the songs in it by heart in 2008. - J.F.)

Anna Aurelia (Allender) Barnett - "Grandma Barnett" to Robert E. Thompson, she was the mother of Robbie's step-grandmother, Nellie (Barnett) Ferrin.

Alcana Ferrin - "Grandma Ferrin" to Robert E. Thompson, she was the mother of Robbie's step-grandfather, Ernest L. Ferrin.

Nellie Mabel (Ferrin) Ely - "Aunt Nellie" to Robert E. Thompson, she was the sister of Robbie's step-grandfather, Ernest L. Ferrin.
