Funeral services for Mrs. Jessie A. VanWey were held from the Baptist Church on Thursday, September 1, 1955. Rev. Dale B. Gates, pastor of the church, officiated. Mrs. VanWey passed away Monday evening in the Comanche County hospital.A mixed quartet composed of Mrs. Dale Gates, Mrs. Joe Harmon, Sam Frantz and Myrel Rich sang "Beyond The Sunset" and "In The Garden." Mrs. Albert Holler was the pianist. Interment was at the Protection cemetery.
Casket bearers were John Wait, John Webb, Clemmie Sanders, Lynn Richardson, Kos Sherman, and Elmer Zimmerman.
OBITUARY Jessie A. Stewart, daughter of Walter L. and Violet Stewart, was born at Parker City, Pa., on December 1, 1875 and died at Coldwater, Kans., August 29, 1955 at the age of 79 years, 8 months and 28 days.
At the age of seven, she came to Wellington, Kans. Later she came to Comanche County to make her home with her sister. She was one of the early pioneers of the Protection community and lived here until her passing.
On November 29, 1892 she was united in marriage to Arthur VanWey, who preceded her in death in 1953. To this union were born three sons: Elmer, who preceded her in death; Irtle S. and Henry W., both of Wichita.
Besides her sons she is survived by one brother, Chester Stewart, of Long Beach, Calif.; five sisters: Ida L. VanWey of Protection, Kans., Ethel Flick of Huntington Park, Calif., Mayne Parker of Alma, Nebr., Mina Holbert of Chester, Okla., and Geneva Wightman of Houston, Texas. One sister, Berta Holland, preceded her in death. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
In her early girlhood she made her decision to accept Christ as her savior and throughout her life her daily living was an example of her Christian service to her Savior, family and neighbors. She was one of the pioneer members of the Protection Baptist Church and was active in the church as long as her health permitted.
