Heritage Park Memorial, Coldwater, Comanche County, Kansas

Photographs by Bobbi (Hackney) Huck

"Above a view from the northwest corner of the park, facing southeast. The materials for the gazebo roof were on site when the photos were taken in May of 2003 while it was being constructed. There are 5 large granite monuments, with servicemen listed on both sides. The monument material is similar to the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D. C. Veterans are listed for WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf War, with another monument for Peacetime veterans. The curved sidewalk leading around the gazebo and up to the memorial tablets is bordered on both sides with tan/red brick paving. Each paving brick has a person's name on it in honor of the people who donated funds to create this memorial. Following are photographs of some of the memorial tablets." -- Bobbi (Hackney) Huck.

Note by Jerry Ferrin: A list of all veterans honored on this memorial is online at http://www.coldwaterkansas.com/vets.html. Unfortunately, as is probably inevitable with projects of this sort, the listing of veterans on these monuments is incomplete. For example, it doesn't list Ben VonAchen (see World War II Casualties), who was born in the New Eden Community in Comanche County and gave his life during WWII while serving as a tail-gunner in a B-17 Flying Fortress in combat over Italy, nor does the list include long-time Comanche County Clerk Walter William Ferrin (my grand uncle), a WWI veteran, or Fred Arthur Ferrin, another World War I veteran. Nevertheless, this monument and the other monuments in Comanche County devoted to service men and women are a powerful testimony to the proud tradition of military service for people from the county as well as to the admirable local tradition of tangibly honoring those who have served their country.

For a MUCH more complete list of veterans from Comanche County, Kansas, see: List of Veterans from Comanche County, Kansas.
