Walter G. Waugh Dies in California

Was Resident of This County From 1913 to 1924

Walter Grant Waugh, son of Henry Seigle and Lovella Mitchell Waugh, was born in Wishart, Polk County, Missouri, November 9, 1889, and passed away at his home in Ventura, Calif., May 10, 1948, at the age of 58 years, 6 months and 1 day.

At the age of 13 he moved with his parents and sisters to Winfield, Kans., where he resided until 1913.

On March 12, 1912, he united in marriage with Miss Josie Pennington. To this union three daughters and a son were born.

From 1913 until 1924 he resided in Comanche county and was engaged in farming.

During World War I he served in the Medical Corps as a teamster at Ft. Riley, Kans., and trained for ambulance service.

From 1924 until his death he made his home in and around Los Angeles, California.

For several years he worked at the Port Hueneme Navy Base as a blacksmith and received several certificates of honor for his commendable work.

He had been suffering from a heart aliment for some time and had spent a few weeks in the Birmingham Veterans hospital at Van Nuys, but had returned home much improved in health. He loved the ocean and spent many hours on the beach surf-fishing, and it was there that he passed away.

Funeral services were held in the Diffenderfer Funeral Chapel on Thursday, May 13 at 2 p.m. with the American Legion in charge. Chaplain Grice gave a comforting message using the 23rd Psalm as his text.

The firing squad was composed of sailors from Port with whom he had worked. The pallbearers were Harry Olander, Clarence Flory and Martin Kennedy of Ventura, Earl Holbrook of Ojai, John Bailey of Santa Paula and Ernest Earl of Silver Strand Beach, all of whom were close associates.

He was a loyal friend and good neighbor to all who knew him and there were many floral tributes of love and respect.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Henry Grant, his mother, father and three sisters.

Mr. Waugh is survived by three daughters; Mrs. H. Lowell Harden of Vale, Ore., Misses Dorothea and Kathryn Waugh and a foster son, Warren Jay, of the home, and by three grandchildren, Jerome, Billy and Judy Harden; also by five sisters: Mrs. R. F. Burt of Wichita, Kans., Mrs. Edgar L. Franklin of Hamilton, Mo., Mrs. L. L. Helvie of Grand Junction, Colo., and Mrs. C. W. Burt and Mrs. J. W. Jones of Coldwater.
