Ruth Baker dies in Protection
Ruth Mae Baker passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2002, at the Protection Valley Manor in Protection, Kansas. She lived to the age of 86.
Born July 21, 1916, in rural Kiowa County north of Wilmore, Kansas, she was the daughter of Samuel and Christina (Booth) Wood.
A homemaker, Ruth was a lifetime resident of Comanche County, Kansas. She graduated from Wilmore High School in 1934. She was a member of the Wilmore Federated Church in Wilmore.
On November 23, 1935, she married Ed Baker at his parent's home in Wilmore. He preceded her in death on August 10, 1998.
In addition to her husband, Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; one granddaughter, Adrian Baker; and two sisters, Helen Pendergraft and Eulah Trummel.
She is survived by one son, Travis Baker and his wife Gail of Protection; one daughter, Mary Smith and her husband Larry of Alma, Arkansas; one brother, Richard Wood of San Diego, California, and three grandchildren, Erin Baker of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; Lane Baker of Protection; and Caleb Smith of Van Buren, Arkansas.
A committal service was held at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, August 31, at the Wilmore Cemetery. A memorial service followed the committal service. That was at the Wilmore Federated Church with Reverend Kent Little of Coldwater presiding.

In Memory of Ruth & Ed Baker: Speaking as someone who has known Ruth & Ed since my earliest childhood, I am saddened by their passing and grateful for the opportunity to have once been part of the community of which they were such a vital part.
My last visit with them was in September of 1991, after a friend and I attended the Wilmore Federated Church one Sunday morning. Ruth mentioned that she had been friends with my great grandmother, Alcana (Wagner) Ferrin, and that she had some photos of her which my grandfather had given her after Alcana had died. She invited us to have dinner with her and Ed after she gave me the opportunity to copy those photographs.
That was one of the most enjoyable parts for me of that trip to Comanche County, as I'd always thought fondly of both Ruth & Ed. Ed and I talked about the summer when I was 14 and worked for him, bucking alfalfa bales along with Richard Janson and Ronnie Scott, most of the summer. Ruth shared her memories of her friendship with both my great grandmother and my paternal grandmother, Nellie May (Barnett) Ferrin.
Somewhere I have photos I took of Ruth & Ed at the time in their magnificent flower garden just west of their house. When I find them, I'll post those photos on this web page.
They were exceptionally fine people and I'll always remember their kindness, friendliness, good humor and how much I enjoyed knowing them. I offer my sincere condolences to Travis, Mary Helen and their other relatives.
