The Wilmore Cemetery Association was formed on September 12, 1913. The cemetery's land was purchased from John Bell. Located on a hill north of Wilmore in the southwestern quarter of S18-T31-R17, the land had already been the site of several family burials. Mayor Ware helped lay out the cemetery. He based his idea of no trees or shrubs on cemeteries he had seen in California. Lots were platted and sold for one dollar each. The cemetery was fenced in 1914. A constitution and by-laws were drawn up May 21, 1917. President was T.C. Pepperd; vice-president, J. Berry Ware; secretary-treasurer, R.O. Nevens; and directors, Robert Booth and C.E. Richardson.
After fifty years, the Powell Township board began overseeing the cemetery. Lawrence York, Jr. was trustee in 1980; Glenn Dillinger, clerk; and Lester Fry, Jr., treasurer. For over twenty years Josh Pendergraft was caretaker, then Charlie Pendergraft. The board recently purchased a mower. The cemetery has continued to look nice, thanks to the efforts of concerned citizens of Wilmore. As of September 1, 1980, 274 burials had been made. Memorial Day services are held each year, followed by a reunion dinner at the Federated Church.

The wrought iron fence installed around the cemetery in 1996 was the gift of Geneva Bell Pepperd.
The Wilmore Cemetery is on a hill just north of Wilmore, Kansas. You can see it in this USGS aerial photo of the town.
This web page has a complete, as of 21 December 2002, listing of all known burials in the Powell Township Cemetery, which is commonly known as the Wilmore Cemetery.
The list was compiled by Bobbi (Hackney) Huck, who prepared the list for this webpage from her gravestone readings in the cemetery, then added information on burials from the official Wilmore Cemetery Record Book with the help of Les and Norine Fry. Bobbi also has annotated this burial list with information from news clippings collected by her grandmother, Ollie Nora (Deewall) Hackney and from interviews with Helen & Bob Hackney and other people.
If you'd like to join me in thanking Bobbi Huck, Shirley Brier & everyone else who has helped with this webpage, please sign the Guest Book.

Note by J.F.: Ernest Leroy Ferrin was the husband of Nellie May Barnett and the son of Loren & Alcana (Wagner) Ferrin. His grandparents were Reuben & Hannah Philura (Murch) Ferrin and Daniel & Mary A. (Horner) Wagner. He was generally known as "Ernie" Ferrin. He was called "Poppy" by his grandchildren and by most of the children in the Wilmore Community. He was fond of having "watermelon feeds" and "weinie roast" picnics for his grandchildren on their birthdays and would go to the Wilmore School to pick up his grandchildren and their classmates for a ride on a tractor-drawn hay wagon out to a picnic ground he maintained beside Spring Creek on his farm. He was fond of practical jokes. The poem, Poppy & the Zoo, was written in honor of him. Incidentally, the death date I have recorded for him is 10 May 1974.

Map of Burials: Powell Township Cemetery
Other Burial Locations in the Area of Wilmore, Comanche County, Kansas
Another burial location, the Chitwood Cemetery, lies eight miles east of Wilmore in the northwest corner of S15-T31-R16. It dates back to the turn of the century and has not been used for many years. Other known gravesites in the Wilmore area include those in the northeast corner of S25-T32-R16, the southwest quarter of S29-T32-R17, and the southwest quarter of S26-T32-R17. The later location is presumably the Bethel Cemetery referred to in 1887 by the Nescatunga Enterprise. The paper listed the burials of Mr. and Mrs. A.H. Ellis's infant son and George Wheeler in March of that year.
