Robert and Jean Hackney

I was born July 24, 1926 to William and Ollie (Deewall) Hackney of Wilmore, Kansas. I had Grandpa and Grandma, Edward & Ella Deewall and two sisters, Audra & Norine, to welcome me home. I grew up loving the farm. I attended the New Eden country school, located one-half mile east of my house, through the sixth grade. I began attending Wilmore High School in my seventh grade. I graduated from Wilmore High School in 1944 with eleven classmates.

After graduation, I continued to farm and ranch with my father. My parents purchased a home in Coldwater in 1951, and moved from the homeplace 8.5 miles east of Coldwater, which is where I still reside.

May 6th, 1951 I was married to Jean Harris, daughter of Marion and Opal Harris of Greensburg, Kansas. We were married at Hazelton, Kansas by Reverend Jack Thomas, a former pastor of the Wilmore Methodist Church.

Jean graduated from Haviland High School in 1949. She then attended Emporia State College for one semester, when an illness forced her to return home. She then worked for the telephone company and the Extension Office at Greensburg. She belonged to the Wilmore Federated Church and the Wilmore Bible Study Club.

Four children were born to us: Beverly Ann (now Malone) March 6th, 1954; Bobbi Jean (now Huck) April 13, 1956; James Lane (m.to Cindy Donnel) December 24, 1959; and Robert Lynn ("Skip") April 8th, 1964. Jean was plagued with much sickness and died December 9th, 1975.

I belong to the Wilmore Federated Church, Masonic Lodge and the Coldwater Country Club. I have served as Comanche County Extension chairman, Farm Bureau President, ASCS committee member, agriculture delegate and a member of the Hospital and Homes Board for the Dodge City district for the Methodist Church.

Lane graduated from Coldwater High School in 1978. After graduation he attended Northwestern State University in Alva, Oklahoma, and Butler Community College in Eldorado. He was on the football team at both schools, and was majoring in Physical Education. He is also helping me at the farm part time.

"Skip" (Robert Lynn) is a junior at Coldwater High School. He is involved in many activities at school. Among them are yearbook, debate, basketball, and is very involved in music. After graduation he plans to attend Southwestern State University at Weatherford, Oklahoma. His goal is to be a pharmacist.

I have since been remarried to the former Helen Carlisle on September 11, 1976. We continue to live in the New Eden Community, and share in much happiness together. I am busy farming and improving a herd of Hereford cattle for my hobby.
