Most of the burials in the Wilmore Cemetery (pictured in the USGS photo at left) are inside the loop road; the straight edge of the loop road is the northern edge of the cemetery.

About the area adjacent to the Wilmore Cemetery The piece of land adjoining the cemetery to the north and east has long been, for unknown reasons, called The Zoo. In April of 1989 I interviewed my father about the land, which my grandfather owned for many years, at the request of Evelyn Reed. Here's that interview with Wendel Ferrin, 13 April 1989, about The Zoo, Indian skulls, arrowheads and artifacts found in the area, and about two men associated with the land, Ira Schultz and "Doll-Slam-It" Baldwin.
Later in 1989, The Kansas Archeology Training Program (KATP), a cooperative effort of the Kansas State Historical Society (KSHS) and the Kansas Anthropological Association (KAA) conducted a "dig" just north of "The Zoo" at what is now known as the Comanche County Booth Site (14CM406). During the 1989 KATP event, 130 KAA members, including Evelyn Reed, volunteered approximately 5,590 hours in the study of this Middle Ceramic period Wilmore complex site. View photograph
On 21 December 2002, A Complete Listing of All Known Burials in the Powell Township Cemetery, compiled by Bobbi Huck and illustrated with photos by her and "Ed" Schrock, was first published. Bobbi also provided, at that time, the information on burials by lot and row number which appears above in the form of a chart.
The listings are correct so far as I know; if errors are found, they're mine, not Bobbi's, and will be quickly correctly if kindly pointed out.
If you'd like to join me in thanking Bobbi Huck and everyone else who has contributed to these pages in honor of people in the Wilmore Community, please sign the guestbook.
