Samuel Ridge, who came to this county in the late seventies (1870's), and settled in the Richland township, passed away at his home in Basil, Tuesday night. He was 83 years of age, last January.Funeral services were held for Mr. Ridge at the Trenton church, yesterday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Moore of Wichita. Burial was in the Hunt cemetery by the side of his late wife.
Mr. Ridge was one of the best known men in this section of the country. For many years, he was engaged in farming. Several years ago, when an effort was made to close the post office at Basil and consolidate the rural route which started at that place with another route, Mr. Ridge was prevailed upon to take the office as postmaster. He held that office until this spring, when he resigned because he wanted to spend the remaining time he had left in this life with no responsibilities. He probably felt that he did not have much longer to be with his children and grandchildren and wished to be free to spend these remaining days as he pleased with them.
Born in Indiana in 1848, Mr. Ridge spent his early manhood in that state. During the Civil War, he enlisted in the United States Army and served with distinction for the duration of the war.
Few men have lived in Kingman county, who numbered as many loyal friends as did Mr. Ridge. There are a number of relatives, many living in the Basil neighborhood, who will miss his counsel and advice. -- Reprinted from The Leader-Courier, Kingman, Kansas.
Mrs. A. C. Ridge, Lauren Ridge, Martha Ridge and Mr. and Mrs. Faye Smith of Wilmore attended the funeral. Mr. Ridge was the father-in-law of Mrs. Ridge.
