Thank you so much for posting the obit for O.G. Young. Although my great-grandfather was a central character in many family stories, the obit provided new information and confirmed some dates that will help us with further research.

Again, thank you so much.

I have contacted you about Jack Ashcraft in the past. I am his grand niece. I have received more information about him in the form of two scrapbooks. I'm going to try to scan them to preserve the articles and possibly look into microfilming them. They belong to a second cousin, but I'm going to suggest that they be placed in the aviation museum in Liberal.

I found information on Archie L. Cantrell that I had been missing from my family tree. All I knew of him was on the back of my great-great grandpartens headstone in Hart Co, KY: CANTRELL, Archie L. (grandson of PA & Agnes Williams) June 22, 1886 - Sept. 29, 1918 (Lost at sea).

He moved with his family around 1910 to the Kansas & Oklahoma areas. By finding this info on him is like bring him home again...Thank you for the wonderful website you have made! If only other websites would honor our past the way you have, genealogy would be much easier!

Wow! I was looking for information about a cousin who passed away and stumbled on this website. My father, Richard Cline, was raised in Coldwater (son of Kenneth and Nellie Cline) and I spent every summer there while growing up. Unfortunately many members of my family, including my father, have passed over the last 10 years. Scanning your site was like coming home. I saw the beloved faces of my dad's uncles and aunts who were such a big part of my early years. I hadn't been able to attend any of the funerals, yet being able to read the obituaries was wonderful. They were such great people! I am especially grateful to have been able to read of Junior and Gloria Cline, Martha Cline, and Raymond Cline. I would like to thank my cousin Rhonda for putting all the information out there.

My great granddad Rev. Joseph S. Bailey is buried in the Protection Cemetery and his obituary appeared in the Protection Post on 6-26-1913. Although he lived with his wife Rosa Shipman Bailey in Paruna Okla he was a circuit riding minister of the Christian Church. He was married by John Newton Mulkey on 12-12-1870 to his second wife and my great grandmother Eleanor Thompson Bailey. Does anyone know of a Rev. Tanksley of the christian church who performed his funeral service? I have 26 yrs of Bailey family research and an excellent photo of my great granddad with his Bible in his hand. Thanks for the posting of his obit on the cemetery website.

I want to thank you for publication of the obituary of my great granddad, Rev. Josephous Bailey on the Comanche Co Ks website. I have 26 yrs of Bailey family research on my Bailey family and trying to get the Christian Church to add Rev. Josephous Bailey's name to early circuit riding ministers of that faith. His granddad was American Rev. War patriot Callam Holman Bailey of Barren Co Ky. I have an excellent photo of Rev. Josephous Bailey holding his bible. In May 2006 we had a Bailey family reunion of descendants from each of his three wives. Of course he was married to each after death of the previous or other factors. Thanks again for this posting.

Jerry, the Comanche County History book, volume 2 will be published this year. (The first Comanche County History was published in 1980 and I worked on that book, too). Family histories (760 of them) are now being "laid out" by Bell Books. I have been researching for the general history and typing articles from the Protection Post, the Protection Press, and The Western Star during the years of 1980 through 2006 (Can you imagine flipping through 8,000 pages of newsprint scanning for information? Neither can I, but I did it.) I have come up with approximately 400 typed pages of information: too much to include in the new history book. In fact, I need to condense those 400 pages into just a few pages for inclusion into the new history book. Therefore, I was very pleased to visit with you over the telephone on January 22, 2007, and knowing that I can email you all my information. You can decide whatever you would like to use of all that information on this website later this year. I have grouped my information on these topics: agriculture, bridges, businesses, former businesses, churches, events, medical, organizations, railroads and transportation, recreation, schools, weather, Protection, Coldwater and Wilmore. There is much history taking place in Comanche County and I am pleased to record it for future generations. Sincerely yours, Susan (Strobel) Edmonston

Jerry,

Not sure if you remember me.

In the late 70's you and I crossed paths at the San Manuel mine. I'm not quite sure how or why. Maybe I was a lemonhead as that's about the time I started to work at the mine, though I had been working for Magma since 1972.

I do remember that your were the editor of a little rag called mazzigine<sp>. I think I still have my copy...

Anyway, I stumbled upon your Magma web page and really
enjoyed reading your recollections about Magma. I too
remember Ollie.

You no doubt heard about the felling of the stacks.

What a shame, what with copper > $2.00 now days.

(Note by Jerry Ferrin, 25 June 2008: Mazagine was a literary/arts publication of Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona. It won numerous national awards for excellence in the years Nard Taiz was instructor for the class which edited, designed and produced it. We published books, calenders, broadsides and posters. I hand-bound a codex book made of copies of the Mazagine calenders we published and may someday donate it to the University of Arizona Poetry Center. Copies of all editions of Mazagine are no doubt available in the Pima Community College main campus library. )

I enjoyed the site and the information about Lieutenant Victor E. Willard. My dad was assigned duty as a flight instructor at Gibbs Field Fort Stockton, TX and searching for information on that facility led me to this web site. I have one volume of "Solo" for Class 44-E which prompted my search for more information.

A note by Director of Flying, Johhny E. Smith, says sixteen classes have graduated from the Pacific Air School at Fort Stockton since the first class entered in June, 1942. He also mentiones the school being taken over by the Central Flying Training Command in March, 1943, When Major James W. Dieterich came here to assume command.

I don't know when Class 44-E began or completed their primary training but the class number makes me believe it must have begun in 1944.

Thank you

Comment: Thank you for all the work you have done to create & maintain this site. It brings back a lot of memories of family & friends from my boyhood in Coldwater. I graduated from CHS in 1948.

On visits there my wife & I have been particularly impressed by the way the cemetery has been maintained by the community. My father, Ernest, & my grandparents & several family members are interred in Crown Hill. I was informed by my brother Eldon, who still lives in Coldwater with his wife, Marie, that the late Vertis Swarner, whom I knew, along with his family, left an endowment to commission the creation of the beautiful monument of The Last Supper, & also to help support the ongoing cemetery maintenance. I would greatly appreciate receiving a copy of the quotation about how the treatment & respect for their deceased reflects the sensitivity & values of a community. Thank you very much, & keep up the good work

Thank you for background information to fill in my own family history. I am Susan L. Suhler, granddaughter of John and Jessie (Stuart) Suhler, of rural Sharon, Barber County, Kansas. Through visits to Grandma and Grandpa Suhler and sons who later ran the farm, I gained a strong part of my history: my life-long friendship with Mary Ann (Schiff) Erickson (Mrs. Richard Erickson), granddaughter of India R. Huffaker, who was the mother of Mary Huffaker Schiff (Mrs. Emmitt Schiff, Sharon, Kansas).

I am the grandson of Ronald H. Wright, and great grandson of Grant Lucius Wright ("boppa", to my mother Sherry Wright). I can't believe I found Memories of Lew Baker on this site! I have personally heard the cassette tape my great grandfather Grant made detailing some of his history, and finding this is just awesome! Thank You, Brian.

Note by Jerry Ferrin: The Baker, Powell and Wright families were among the earliest settlers in Comanche County, Kansas. Following is a partial list of the many pages on this site about these families and related families:

Any info or resources you can give would be very appreciated. Thank you. My mom tells stories about how they had to hit the ground with burlap sacks to get rid of rattlesnakes before funerals, and how she used to help her dad.

I'm doing extensive research on RAF and USAAF losses in my area, Normandy, during World War 2. My goal is a book to honour their sacrifice for freedom here. I would like very much tracing relatives of Lt. Louis T. Barron who was killed in action June 26, 1943, flying with the 56th FG. I was shown the crash-site in the village of Landes Vieilles et Neuves (south Dieppe)and was given several .50 bullets from his P-47. Any contact is most welcome. Thank you.

Great Job on this site with all the resources and information is Wonderful! Very interesting and well done!

I am a Genealogist, Historian and Archaeologist. I do Investigations and Research on Ghost towns - most time Missouri and sometimes Kansas Pre-Civil War Extinct ones, but I find these in Comanche county, Kansas very interesting!

But I Especially found the one Ghost town of NESCATUNGA Very Much interesting amd would enjoy exploring it sometime!!

Is there anyway I can visit this townsite sometime and is there any other maps, plats and other information on this Ghost Town of NESCATUNGA? I also enjoyed the Music of Stars fell on Nescatunga, where did this song come from and who wrote it?

Keep up the Great Job and it is one of the Best Rootsweb.com that I've found. Most Interesting and Well Done!

Thanks For Yor Time!!
Christopher N. Cooper @ cooperhill1858@peoplepc.com

(Note by Jerry Ferrin: There are many things, such as plat maps, for Nescatunga in the county courthouse. Contact: Guyneth Snyder, Registrar of Deeds, 201 S. New York, Coldwater, Kansas 67029. There are no buildings still standing on the town site, though you can still see where some of the streets were. There are many cellar holes where houses once stood. The former site of Nescatunga and the Nescatunga Cemetery are on privately-owned land. Please inquire at the courthouse for the owners' names, then contact them to ask permission to visit the site of the town or the cemetery. Trespassing is against the law.)

How I got here, I'm not quite sure.... Oh, yes, I was digging through the Kansas Poetry site and read Jerry Ferrin's poem about Walking with his Grandmother, which I loved. Then I kept following the cyber trail, and here I am.

This has been fascinating: Jerry Ferrin, if you read this, you've done a very good thing. I'm a Kansan, and I like this historic, poetic, personal, informational website. I'll stop by here again. However, I'm not sure where I am, so I'll bookmark it. I've been tracing Jerry Ferrin's ancestors' lives. And it started with a poem.
Thanks.

Of course, the Coldwater Lake is a beautiful attraction. There are still quite a few folks we know there. It's always fun to go back home. In 1914 my father and family moved from North of St. John KS to Comanche Co.,he was 8 yrs. old. They had a farm/ranch in Shimer TWP until they moved back to North of St. John in 1931. Two of his brothers married sisters, daughters of Frank Bailey, who also farmed in Shimer TWP and later in Powell TWP. I am planning on visiting the area soon and see if I can locate the areas they were in and check for gravestones in Coldwater and Wilmore. My father had started working on family history before his death in 1982 and I have his "Random Recollections of My Life" that he wrote about his growing up in Comanche and Stafford Counties, I find them very interesting.

Picked up the Comanche Co. site from the Sun City and Wilmore, seems like everyone knew each other so well that it only spiked the competition. Of course Jim Downing, Floyd Ward and Bob McCorkle all marrying girls from Sun within a short time no doubt added to the mix. The Redfield boys, Glen and George, from Wilmore, bought one of the stores in Sun and it really did get noisy during the games when they starting playing for their "new" team. Thanks for the memories, Jerry.

(Note by Jerry Ferrin, 25 June 2008: David Massey is one of the most interesting and prolific contributors to my Barber County, Kansas: History and Genealogy web site. One of my favorite pages on that site is Practical Jokes & Backfired Actions: A few stories from Barber County, Kansas, which consists entirely of stories told by David Massey and his brother, Nate Massey.)

"It" being the Internet, and the tremendous craving for on-line, retrievable info.

Yes, Jerry, I'll be glad to add the names. I had written them all in & then decided to take them out. Sorry about that. Perhaps someone will remember some of the names that I mentioned.

I had a great uncle, Oliver Judson Adcock, who farmed in the Wilmore, KS, area in the early 1900's. They are buried in the Wilmore Cemetery. He married Lena (Harville) Adcock (she was a sister to Mary (Harville) Jenkins). Uncle Judson & Aunt Lena had four children, Jack, who resides in Alamosa, CO, Walsie, who resides in New Mexico, Kathryn (Adcock) Dickenson, who lives in Wichita, & Jerry Adcock, who lives in Washington State.
(I have to deviate from the original story here, because of something so unusual happening back in 1998.) We were travelling through AZ on our way to CA to attend a cousin's 50th wedding anniversary. My husband's mother, having lived as a small girl in CA, never had stopped to see the Grand Canyon. So, we took her to the Grand Canyon & rode the travel bus around the south & west rim of the canyon. We got to the Crow's Nest, as far as you could go & the bus driver let the people visit the little shop that was there. We decided to stay on the bus & wait, as my mother-in-law was exhausted from getting on & off the bus along the way. There was a bus driver who was still on the bus, but he wasn't driving, but training a new bus driver. He struck up a conversation with us. Upon finding out that we were from KS, he immediately got caught up with the fact that he was also from KS. Well, to make a long story short, he was from Wilmore, KS. I happened to mention that my great uncle Judson Adcock was from Wilmore. He just about exploded. Come to find out, he is the son of Mary (Harville) Jenkins, sister of my great aunt Lena (Harville) Adcock. His name is Bob Jenkins. Small world, isn't it.

A couple by the name of Roy & Martha (Ridge) Cline (now deceased) who made their home for many years in Coldwater, KS. Martha was either a student at Friends University or Ft. Hays State, & became friends with my mother, Zella (Snell) Skiles, originally from St. John, KS. They had two daughters named Myrna K.(Cline) Bensing & Beth Cline, (I think). I just found a small note from Myrna on your website, so I have e-mailed her.

My ancestors, the Henry Clay & Elizabeth Jane (Allen) Freeman family from Liberty, Union County, IN, traveled by train from IN to Wellington, KS. They loaded all of their possessions onto a couple of wagons along with their family of six children, & settled near Mayfield, KS, in Sumner Co., KS in August 1884. In the year 1887 & 1890, they added two more children. Mr. Freeman farmed until he retired & moved to Conway Springs, Sumner Co., KS, in 1904. My grandmother, Della C. Freeman married Charles Daniel Skiles, who came with his parents & siblings from Ladoga, Montgomery Co., IN, in the late 1890's. All of this taking place during the time that history was being made in Commanche Co., KS.

I did want to add a few more things about the Wright family. Bishop Milton Wright was a circuit-riding minister back in Ohio & Indiana for the Presbyterian church. His two oldest sons, Reuchlin & Loren, both lived in KS at one time. Reuchlin, the oldest farmed in NE KS, while Loren was more the wanderer & rode the Rock Island train to the end, that being Coldwater, KS. Eventually, both Reuchlin & his family & Loren ended up moving back to Dayton, OH, where the entire family lived there. Remember the story about the bicycle shop in Dayton that Wilbur & Orville had before they introduced the world to the airplane. Something else about the Wright family, is the fact that my great grandfather, John David Snell, who moved to St. John, Stafford Co., KS in 1918, had an older sister, Elizabeth Alice (Snell) who married a man by the name of Thomas Charles Wright, a cousin to the famous Milton Wright family. That was something that was told to we grandkids from our grandfather, Walter Snell, who farmed for many years near St. John, in Stafford Co., KS. I have yet to make the connection. Hopefully this is one of those connections which I will be able to prove some day.

Jerry, hopefully, now, you will be able to piece the information I've just given you with what I gave you yesterday. Perhaps there is someone in the Coldwater/Wilmore area that still remembers the names of the people that I mentioned from that area.

Sincerely, Marla (Skiles) Schwiethale
Wichita, KS

Thanks more than I can express for the article from the Nescatunga Enterprise, July 24, 1886, giving my g grandfather (Frank Seaton or Frances Marion Seaton) and g grandmother (Zora Cook) wedding announcement and then the announcement of Sept 3, 1887 of my grandfather's birth.
I have very little information on the g grandparents so I was pleased to read that "Frank is one of our foremost young men" and Miss Cook "is a daughter of our esteemed citizen Squire Cook" Her father was Jesse Cook and I'm assuming "Squire" is a term of respect (?) Thanks again for your response to my inquiry. Now if I could find where he is buried.

Thank you for all your hardwork. I am the oldest daughter of Norman & Melva Huck and I was born and raised SW of Coldwater and SE of Coldwater. It is fun reading about "our" history. So much has been forgotten. I showed the picture of the 50's Buttermilk softball team to my granddaughters since so many of the participants were our family and got to share some of their heritage. Thank you for making this interaction possible. Looking forward to checking out more of the information offered. Also so neat to get to this guestbook page and see my brother do what he does best, ride his horse. Reading about all the tornadoes that went through our west place brought lots of memories forward that have been long forgotton

Great website!! I am a P.H.S. grad. 1960.My parents are Paul Edmonston and Frances E. (Rainbolt) Edmonston. Several generations of Edmonstons have lived and died at Protection, having been among the earliest settlers beginning in the 1880's, I believe, and resettled there from the Holden, Missouri area. My Grandad, Frank Rainbolt, came to the Protection area as a young man by way of Texas and Oklahoma and Lewis, Kansas. Although I have lived away from Protection for many years, I still call it home and find the history of Protection and Comanche county very interesting.

I just want to send my deepest thanks for this website. I was adopted out at birth and after 44 yrs have made contact with my birth father and his side of the family. It just so happens that you posted a picture of my Paternal Grandmother, Josephine Jantzen and a friend of mine found it. He presented it to me at lunch with friends and I cried when I saw her. It was the first time ever that I was able to see anyone from my birth family and it was so very joyous and overwhelming. I look very much like her - - I have her eyes and nose. I can't tell you what this means to me to have been able to see her for the first time. You made that possible. thank you!

I see that Dallas E. Smith is included on the Memorial, and I thank you for that. We didn't know if he would be or not because neither of us remember filing discharge papers. Dallas now lives in Boise, ID, and I live in Stockton, KS, where I taught English for 22 years. My son, Jarrod Damon Smith, is a Navy veteran of both the Gulf War and Somalia. He was activated again after 9-11 and was with the Air National Guard in Turkey during the Iraq War. My other son, John Duane Smith, was also activated with the Air National Guard and was in Kuwait during the Iraq War. The boys grew up in Comanche County and even after we moved away, they spent considerable time with their grandparents, John and Donna Thompson. How do I go about having them included?

Imagine my surprise when I saw the picture of my Aunt, Roberta Tinker Todd. My parents were John S. and Donna Tinker Thompson, and Roberta was Mother's youngest sister.
Did your father graduate in 1948, and why does he have a picture of Aunt Roberta? I remember hearing your father's name, but I don't remember ever meeting any of you. Didn't your father move to Arizona because of his allergies/asthsma?

I am far more familiar with Buck Ferrin. Robert Edward Thompson Ferrin was my nephew, and I always liked Buck. My oldest son was married in a meadow on the next door Rusk Ranch, and the first phone call Arlos had the next morning was from Buck, wanting to know all about the wedding. I was appalled that we hadn't invited him, and I wish Arlos or Maxine had said something. Maxine had taken care of my parents in Coldwater, and my son had been to the ranch with my dad not too long before he died, so that is why he was married there.

I'm very impressed with, and grateful for, this web site. I had relatives, James A. Sims and his wife Jerusha Emmaline Smith Sims who lived in Comanche County in the late 19th century before moving to Oregon, where they both died. James was a brother to Mrs. Mary Eliza Estill (Aunt Lyde), and the Sims children came back to Comanche County to live with her after their parents died. They returned in 1904. If anyone would have more information on the Sims family, the parents of James A. and Mary Eliza, or information on other siblings, I would be grateful for any leads.

Thank you for your service and fine work!

Hey Jerry,

Your work on this Comanche County website is AWESOME. You are certainly a talented 'html guy'. I personally know the many many hours you spend writing html, uploading pages, and correcting or updating pages for many many people. You have done such an outstanding job, and are very dedicated to Comanche County. Proof is in the pudding, you have many many new contributors.

I also am waiting your arrival, to see you again. I believe its been 40 years since I have last seen you. It will be my pleasure to drive you around the county day after day talking about old times, and putting together the pieces for many new articles we have talked about getting online.

I sincerely hope and believe you will get the recognition you deserve while you are here, especially at the OPRY.

Jerry, have a safe trip, and we are all excited that you have decided to come on over.

Thanks again to the greatest 'html guy' online anywhere.

Bobbi

Thank you so much! It is wonderful to gain a picture of all the families and young men from the area in the newspaper quotes. There is no doubt how much everyone was affected. Thanks also to the original writer of the articles or their family. They tell the stories so well. I am particularly grateful to see the article about the radio interview of my uncle HR Burnette by Ginny Simms. I heard a recording at my Grandmother's house when I was small, but the record has long since disappeared and all of my efforts to find another or any copies of the recording have been useless. (Even Philip Morris has no records that I could locate.) To see more words from the interview than I remember in print and to have clarification of those I vaguely do remember, means a lot. Again, thank you to everyone whose efforts put this together!

I've got the '53 Wilmore Tiger yearbook, '56, '58, '63 Coldwater "Eagle," several "Eagle" yearbooks from '73 on, and some Protection "Panther" yearbooks from the '80's, in case maybe some of the older books, at least, might be added. Jerry or Bobbi, just let me know if you're interested. Thanks, and keep up the good, interesting work!

I have so enjoyed reading about Coldwater - brings back childhood memories. My mother was Marie Huck, sister of John, George, Ostwalt and Manuel. On Sundays we would drive down from Larned to spend the day with grandparents Philipp and Charlotte Huck on their farm south of Coldwater, a mile or so from Kindsvaters, always marveling at that WIDE main street as we went past. Thanks to all who put together all this info - especially appreciated the John & Lydia Huck biography - it answered some questions for me.

Jerry, Bobbi and Shirley, Us folks in Comanche County really appreciate what you three and others have done for the research and betterment of our three town's history. Including Comanche County and present day happenings. We also appreciate the intense research that you, Shirley and Jerry, are doing at the present, on the the early 'Opera' in Wilmore. We love the joy of connecting to yesteryear. The folks in those days had wagons and trains bringing people to the Show while the present day Opry folks will be coming in cars and another tour bus this month. Like the song the 'Highwaymen' sings, "They'll always be around".
Thanks

I lived in Davenport, Iowa 1971-1973. I rented a home there and found an old photo alblum in the attic. I have just began to research those picture in the book and the first was a baby picture of G.W. Prichard. Upon reading of the death of this man, I noticed the name Shirley Brier, and thought if anyone in the Prichard family would like to have the photo I would gladly mail it. Also if anyone in the family would like to research the book for the photo's that have no names attached, I can be located at e-mail (e8afret@msn.com) Also, it appears this photo book was the property of Mrs GW Anderson, in Davenport, Iowa. I have not been able to find any info on the Anderson family.

Hi;
I am researching Civil War Veterans from Canada, and those buried in Canada. I am most interested in this from your web page:
J.J. Bagsley, druggist, was born in Canada West, April 30, 1837. At the age of nineteen years he came to the United States and located in Grinnell, Iowa,

At age 19, that would of been roughly 1857. In that year, there was a great depression here in southern Ontairo (then called Canada west), and famine to a a genral crop failure. Manypeopel left this area for the USA> Do you have any more informaiton on this man, as I might be able to track him down, given some time.
thanks
joe
